Entity shares information about the being mary jane cast.Photo by BeingMaryJane via Instagram

The “Being Mary Jane” cast members never failed to wow us throughout their time on the show. BET’s casting director has an eye for character placement. However, the “Being Mary Jane” season four cast made this show something brand new.

This probably has a lot to do with the chemistry between the characters and the embedded friendships they had before the show began. Their personalities and the quirky things about them make the execution of their characters all the more exciting.

To get to know more about each actor and actress and figure out what makes them all unique and amazing, scan through our list of fast and fun facts.

1 Gabrielle Union Played Basketball, Soccer, and Softball in High School.

In her ESPN interview, she explains that she was putting in work for indoor and outdoor sports year-round. It all makes sense when you swipe through her social media or interviews and figure out what an athlete she can be. Don’t let the high-heels and high-fashion fool you. Gabrielle Union can do both.

2 Valarie Pettiford is an actress, Dancer and Jazz Singer.

Valarie is a new addition to the “Being Mary Jane” season four cast. However, that doesn’t mean this is her first rodeo. She’s acted on “Half&Half” as DeeDee, and soap operas such as, “Another World” and “One Life to Live.” She developed her show business career at Bob Fosse productions on Broadway where she was a dancer and choreographer. She also completed a tour as a Jazz Singer for the dbMEDIA Group.

3 Michael Ealy watches “Ice Loves Coco.”

In the same boat as Valerie, Michael is a new member of the “Being Mary Jane” season four cast. And apparently, he also likes to watch low-rated reality TV.

In his 2012 interview with Essence Magazine, he tried to explain his reason for watching the show. “I don’t know why,” he said. “It might be because they have a bulldog named Spartacus, and that’s just genius.”

4 Lisa Vidal Owned a Children’s Clothing Store called Oodles.

The businesswoman and mother on and off screen opened up a children’s clothing store in Studio City, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. It sold gently used baby and toddler clothing for a discounted price.

Sadly, the store is closed now.

5 Raven Tyshanna Goodwin has been acting since she was 4.

IMDb shows that Raven was a childhood star, dating back to the heartwarming movie, “Lovely and Amazing” (2001). Her acting in this movie won her three nominations from the online Film & Television Company, Black Reel Awards and Film Independent Spirit Awards. Other roles she’s known for include Disney’s “Good Luck Charlie” and the drama film, “All About Us.”

6 Margaret Avery Played Shug Avery in “The Color Purple” (1985).

Similar to Valarie Pettiford, Margaret is also a woman of many talents. She’s been in Broadway, films, TV and musical tours. However, her most well-known roll comes from her amazing depiction of the larger-than-life character, Shug Avery, from “The Color Purple.” Margaret’s ability to pull off a complex character started way before Helen from “Being Mary Jane.”

7 Richard Roundtree was the first black action hero.

As the Urban Daily writes, Richard obtained this title from his role in “Shaft” (1971) as a private detective. In the culture of action reigning supreme in the box office and on television, we can all appreciate a good action hero. What’s more, we can appreciate the man who paved the way for other African-American action heroes.

8 Chik Okonkwo is actually from England.

We know what you’re thinking: what’s unique about being English? Well, a few years ago there wasn’t a huge market for young black men from the U.K. in American TV and film. But now, we have Daniel Kaluuya, David Oyelowo and Chiké Okonkwo to fill in that deficit. Chiké’s accent isn’t some American butchered version (thank God), and he’s fit into American media just fine.

Before he became a part of the “Being Mary Jane” season four cast and gave us the best “Being Mary Jane” boyfriend we’ve had to date, he acted in the film “Birth of a Nation” with Gabrielle Union.

9 BJ Britt Jr. is a superhero.

Like his TV father, BJ also makes the list of action heroes. He acts as a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent named Antoine Triplett that excels in marksmanship, martial artists, flying planes and healing other people’s wounds. The Marvel star recently upgraded on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.  Although, Triplett doesn’t canonically become the Patriot, BJ Britt will be playing the superhero in the next season.

We know, we know… you’re missing these characters already. But don’t stress.

“Being Mary Jane” returns July 18th, 2017. For more information on these characters and their love for each other and the show, watch this BET video that gave us four minutes of smiles and laughter.
