ENTITY reports that Margot Robbie will star as Harley Quinn again in the next DC Comic's film "Gotham City Sirens."

In a landmark moment that shows Hollywood finally understands that comic book characters are not just for boys, an all-female spin off of “Suicide Squad” has been announced.

Margot Robbie is to return to her role as  the original movie’s Harley Quinn and this time will be joined by other bad girls from the DC Comics universe.

Warner Bros. movie “Gotham City Sirens” is also set to feature Poison Ivy and Catwoman.

There’s no female director, however. “Suicide Squad” filmmaker David Ayer will direct and produce the follow up, according to The Hollywood Reporter. But screenwriter Geneva Robertson-Dworet will bring some extra female influence to the project.

Critics and audiences agreed that Robbie’s Harley Quinn was the breakout character of the original film, stealing the movie from Will Smith, Jared Leto and her other male co-stars. So moviemakers are putting more female villains alongside her for the follow up.

“Gotham City Sirens” will be based on a comic series of the same name which ran from 2009 to 2011. It may also mark a big step forward for the LGBTQ community if the film develops a romance between Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy which played out in several of the comic books.

Although Robbie is the only actress linked to the project for now, news of the movie has sent the Internet into a brainstorming casting session. Twitter users have suggested other stars as potential candidates play the other leading ladies. Their proposed picks include Holland Roden, Rose Leslie and Christina Hendricks as  Poison Ivy while Ruby Rose, Eva Green and Ruth Negga have all been mentioned as contenders for Catwoman.

DC may also bring back actresses who have portrayed these parts in the past, including Anne Hathaway and Uma Thurman. Anne Hathaway has previously expressed interest in returning to the role of Catwoman. “I loved that character and I had such a blast playing her,” she said earlier this year.

Despite who gets chosen for the coveted roles, “Gotham City Sirens” will be a breakthrough for female comic book characters.

“Done properly, a Gotham City Sirens projects would push one of DC’s most successful, beloved characters further into the forefront, underscore the studio’s commitment to onscreen diversity in a genre that, to date, has been frustratingly conservative and continue to build the wider world of the DC Extended Universe and populate it with fan-favorite characters,” The Hollywood Reporter says.

Like all blockbusters, the movie will have been green lit partially for financial reasons. But the film still promotes an inclusive approach to a formally male-centric comics club.
