Amelia Earhart’s contested disappearance in 1937 may be one step closer to being solved, thanks to researchers. A skeleton was discovered off of the coast of the remote island where she was suspected to have crashed. Yet Earhart’s success as a pioneer pilot should not be overshadowed by her potential remains.

Muriel Earhart Morrissey – Amelia Earhart’s sister – emphasizes the importance of remembering her achievements while she was alive rather than her tragic end.

“It’s not the mystery of her disappearance that we want to stress,” Earhart Morrissey told Bio. “To her flying was such a wonderful experience and she wanted it to be safe. She wanted people to enjoy it as she did.”

Amelia came from a tough background with a father suffering from substance abuse and financial struggles within her family. She avoided traditional stereotypes for women as a result of her childhood.

“Amelia was a rambunctious child, though her mother wanted her to be a proper lady instead of a tomboy,” the Bio video above says.

This alternative approach to life translated to Earhart’s adulthood, influencing her relationship with George Palmer Putnam. The publisher proposed to the pilot six times before she accepted the engagement and drafted a peculiar prenup detailing her commitment to her craft and warning him she may not be faithful throughout their marriage. The couple eventually wed in 1931, at which time Amelia wore a brown suit and remained together until her disappearance.

This unconventional approach to living let her to live an inspirational life as the first female pilot to cross the Atlantic Ocean without a co-pilot, as well as completing several additional impressive flights and purchasing two planes. In addition to flying, Earhart’s aviator career also gave her an opportunity to be a published writer and saleswoman in the airplane industry. Although her life ended abruptly. Amelia Earhart was truly a #WomenThatDid during her career.
