Candy Carson has a true passion for learning. During her time at Yale University she majored in psychology and music and was pre-med. Later, she went on to earn her MBA in Business Administration from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School.

It’s evident that Candy has a passion for education. Now, she and her husband work together to award students with $1,000 scholarships for college.

2 She’s A Musician.

Her love for music began at a young age. Her mother was a church organist. Later, Candy went on to receive a degree in music from Yale University. When she was at Yale she was a part of the Yale Symphony.

Candy is a former concert violinist. When her husband, Ben Carson, was getting ready to kick-off his campaign, she sang the National Anthem.

3 She’s The Co-Founder Of Carson Scholar Fund.

In 1996, Candy and her husband co-funded the Carson Scholar Fund. In the first year they were able to award 25 students who they felt deserved a scholarship. Now, 21 years later, thanks to partners and donors they are able to annually award 500 scholarships, each worth $1,000. In total, Carson Scholars have received $4.7 million towards helping pay for their education.

4 She’s Married To Ben Carson.

Both Candy and her husband are Detroit natives. However, it wasn’t until they were both at Yale that they met. They married in 1975, and now share three sons.

Candy has said in interviews that at the beginning of their marriage she had to raise their sons alone. This was due to her husband spending 29 years being the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital. Her husband has gone on to become the first African-American and youngest doctor to be in that position.

5 She’s An Author.

With the passion that Candy has for learning and education as a whole, it’s no surprise that she’s written some books. Candy and her husband have co-authored four books that are likely to be seen in a political science class.

Moreover, Candy also released a memoir titled, “A Doctor in the House: My Life with Ben Carson,” in 2016. In this memoir she shares her humble beginnings, life as a married woman and also speaks about the prejudice that African-Americans face.
