ENTITY explores simple cancer preventions.

When we wake up in the morning, we think a quick “thank you” to whatever is responsible for giving us another day of what is hopefully good health. For those who are waking up with a cold, or something like pneumonia, to make ourselves feel better we think, “Well, at least it’s not cancer.” Dark, but it is true.1.

Most, if not all of us, are hesitant to visit the doctors out of fear that we will be told we have cancer. So, we just stay away for as long as possible. But why live in fear when you can live in confidence? According to Cancer Research UK, “more than 4 in 10 cancer cases could be prevented by lifestyle changes.” Here are five quick and painless lifestyle changes:

1 Don t Smoke

This may be the most well known tip among them all. Once glamorized by the media, smoking is now almost immediately linked with lung cancer rather than being cool. If you have never picked up a cigarette, do yourself a favor and make a vow to never do it. If you have already developed a dependency on cigarettes, do what you can to rid yourself of it. There are natural and healthier ways to deal with anxiety that don’t run the risk of developing a fatal disease.

2 Maintain A Proper Diet

Healthy eating habits are more than just fun to incorporate into your lifestyle, they help to save your life. Super foods like spinach, strawberries, and Brazil nuts are linked to the prevention of multiple forms of cancer. There really is no reason to disregard the tip of eating food. You can feel the change in how your body works when you give it the fuel it needs, and the nutrients from the food silently work to keep your boat afloat and away from all illness.

3 Embrace Your Cup of Joe

Yep, you understood me correctly. According to Prevention, “Java lovers who drank 5 or more cups of caffeinated coffee a day had a 40% decreased risk of brain cancer, compared with people who drank the least, in a 2010 British study.” At almost the same rate, the 5 cup a day regime reduces the risk of oral and throat cancer at almost the same rate. Furthermore, a cup of coffee has proven to be more effective than caffeinated tea.

4 Practice Safe Sex

Hopefully, most sexually active people have been taught the risks of having unprotected sex. Beyond the potential contraction of chlamydia and herpes are HIV, HPV, and AIDS. According to Mayo Clinic, “People who have HIV or AIDS have a higher risk of cancer of the anus, liver and lung. HPV is most often associated with cervical cancer, but it might also increase the risk of cancer of the anus, penis, throat, vulva and vagina.” Just wear a condom.

5 Air Dry Your Nails

According to Reader’s Digest, “Ultraviolet drying lamps at nail salons do carry an increased risk of skin cancer for every use.” Even though different machines emit different levels of radiation, you still run a huge risk of damaging enough skin cells to significantly increase a chance of developing skin cancer. Furthermore, “For most of the lamps tested, eight to 14 visits over 24 to 42 months will create damaged DNA. Instead, protect your hands by applying sunscreen before your mani, or letting your nails air dry.”

Cancer is something no one ever wants to deal with and if you have never encountered it, you ought to consider yourself very lucky. But instead of further relying on mere luck to keep cancer out of your life, take some steps to protect yourself from keep your health at its best for a lifetime.
