Mentorship July 6, 2018
The bigger picture.
Summer internships. Not the most fun combination of words. But working at ENTITY Academy? Much better.
My summer job at ENTITY Academy was full of fun. In addition to the hard skills, writing assignments and flat out work, I learned more about myself than anticipated.
Sure, I’ve lived on my own for three years, but this time it was different. I was investing in my career and taking a leap to the City of Angels to pursue my dream job working at a women’s publication.
The past seven weeks have been filled with educational experiences, but I’m also taking away mentorships, friends and connections that will follow me well into my future.
Angelica, Silvana, Chloe… I can go on and on. While I only had one internal mentor, I feel confident enough to keep in touch with a few as I embark upon my professional life.
Of course, they helped me when I had questions about editing my article or about the program, but they also genuinely cared about my well-being. I quickly built trust with my mentor and took helpful advice from her.
I feel confident they will continue to offer their wisdom in the writing and PR arena to help me decide my future.
Aside from career help, I discovered the impact that having a real mentor can have on someone’s life and work journey. During this seven-week academy, Angelica became more of a second mom – and not in a bad way. I knew I could talk to her about anything at any time.
In addition, a lot of the speakers we met discussed their experiences with mentors and how a good one can truly help push you into a successful career.
The connections I have created on LinkedIn and in person are second to none. Thanks to ENTITY’s Speaker Series, influential female CEOs and young entrepreneurs gave talks about a wide variety of topics.
I am so thankful I was able to work for a company and with people who share similar values — it made conversations and bouncing ideas off each other so much easier. We all felt comfortable with each other, and quickly found each others’ strengths and weaknesses to help better one another.
I met some of my best friends – not just coworkers – during my summer job at ENTITY Academy. It was a fairly easy move to the west coast as I had several coworkers turned friends to explore the west coast with.
All 50 interns were all going through the same thing; trying to figure out our careers. Because we are similar in age, we can relate to each other.
I built relationships with a variety of people all from different backgrounds and personal stories. Because people are my passion, I was able to expand my horizons and put everything into perspective.
I am confident we will keep in touch, both socially and professionally, because who knows — we all might be working together one day.
I saw the bigger picture. I learned my likes and dislikes; the life I would like to live; the job I would like to have, and the professional field I strive to work in. Most of all, I never took anything for granted. In addition to gaining a more worldly perspective, I became thankful for the little things.
