ENTITY writer shares her internship reflection of how ENITTY has enlightened her.

In the media, we always see interns being portrayed as coffee-getters and paper-shredders. It seemed like a bunch of young millennials are attempting to put themselves out there in the professional world only to be chewing on the butt of the pencils and waiting to fetch the next lunch order from their boss.

With this stereotype in mind, I thought I would be doing work that was specifically assigned and strictly directed. I thought that getting “real world” experience just meant being in an office doing remedial, smaller tasks, but Entity has truly transformed that label for me. I never would have anticipated that “real world” experience meant I would be learning so much about all the different cultures, people, and ideas of the world. I have never spent a summer in my life learning as much as I did while with Entity. This publication has taught be so much about what it really means to be a part of not only the #womenthatdo, but also the greater, global community.

Although, I have always been interested in social issues such as diversity and politics, my opinions and background just stayed surface level. It’s quite easy to get stuck in a suburban bubble where everything around me always seemed to be going just peachy. With Entity, I was encouraged to explore and dig deeper to really understand what was going on in the larger world that I belong to.

Through the research I did in order to write articles, I learned about little details and facts that I would have just skimmed by before. Having to synthesize and simplify sometimes-complex information for my readers helped me delve into these large issues myself. I began to create more-informed opinions on many issues such as the race in America, mass shootings, and next presidential candidates. I never would have developed this ability to learn and understand what it is to be human on this planet if it wasn’t for Entity.

With writing articles, I had a freedom that I know I wouldn’t have had at any other publication. I was able to pitch ideas and pick topics that I was really passionate about. I could go in any direction I wanted with my writing as long as I was producing authentic, unbiased, and knowledgeable content.

One type of content that I found myself being most interested in were the inspirational stories about real people and their accomplishments despite adversity. One of my favorite articles that I wrote is called “Inspirational Stories After the Orlando Shooting.” After such a tragic event where it is easy to be saddened and lose hope in humanity, I looked for the glimpses of light through the darkness. What I found warmed my heart to know that good people do exist despite all of the tragedy that has happened this year.

With that, I also liked being able to bring controversial issues to the table, because they should not be ignored. I wrote many articles dealing with diversity and I think those are the ones that not only made me a more aware and informed person, but also someone wants to do something about it. I think Entity has really allowed me to do that by providing this platform where not only women, but any person can look to if they want to learn something.

I am so thankful for this internship with Entity, because it has taught me so much about myself and the world around me. Working during this summer hasn’t been so much work as much as it has been a tremendous learning experience. It has instilled in me a newfound thirst for knowledge and craving to share that with others. It has played a pivotal role in helping me form my own ideas and voice for which I will continue on the path to be a woman who always does.
