Because women being petty and trying to tear each other down is beyond played out.
One of the major questions bouncing around the midseason premiere is if Erica will finally be straight up with Candace. “The Haves and the Have Nots” haven’t missed a beat since the hiatus after episode 11. As per usual, there was twist after twist.
A new development many thought we would get this episode was whether or not Erica would be real with Candace and actually be a good friend. The answer to that was no. You could see Erica become more hesitant than ever before, especially after she finds out War killed Quincy Jr. in the cross-fire.
However, she still keeps her mouth shut, and Candace continues to believe she has a friend in her. How tragic.
Apparently, Erica and Candace used to work together to tag team certain male marks. We found out they were connected when Erica created that fake back-up story to sell Benny that amazingly expensive car. We found out later that this was all orchestrated by Candace to get the car to Hanna, but that was the first time we saw the duo in action.
The two had clicked so well and worked so great together. It seemed completely organic for Candace to bring Erica in on the Jim and David sting. Erica would seduce David and get back the money David hid for Jim, so that Erica and Candace could split the bill (I’m assuming). The two characters were the perfect escort duo – scheming guys and collecting their coins. All of this seemed great until Erica showed her true colors to War.
Apparently, Erica and War are together and Erica has been perfectly fine acting as the double agent for him. In her defense, even though she knew where Candace was, she didn’t rat her out to War when he was clearly amped up on hatred. However, when it comes to Erica, we don’t know if she did this so the sting could still go down, or she did this because she was having second thoughts about betraying Candace.
What we do know is that Candace still trusts Erica and Erica is still acting like Judas – deceptive hug and all. Although Erica knew about Candace’s only child being murdered by War, she didn’t tell her anything.
After everything Hanna did to get Quincy Jr. out of that bad situation – after all of that hope we had for his future – War killed him. Erica knew about the struggle everyone went through for Quincy Jr. and she watched as Erica left thinking everything in her life was fine.
In this moment, we see Erica hesitates when it comes to Candace. It makes you think, just for a second, that she will own up to her actions. But that was just a pipe dream.
This level of shadiness suggests that Erica hates Candace. The question is why? The only thing that comes to mind is jealousy.
Maybe Candace skimmed off of Erica’s client list. Or maybe Candace deceived Erica in the past the same way she deceived War. It could be that Erica’s loyalty has simply been misguided.
Regardless, it’s not quite clear yet as to why Erica hates Candace, but it has to be something. And it better be good. I wanted to like Erica. I actually enjoyed Erica and Candace’s friendship before we saw what a backstabber Erica was. Hopefully, it’s a good enough reason for us to empathize with her.
Restoring their relationship won’t be easy by any means. Keeping information like, “Your child was just gunned down by my boyfriend” is disgusting, and I hope Candace can get her revenge.
However, again, there’s nothing like two, powerful women who can work the system for their own good together. I’ve liked that dynamic this season between the two, so I hope at some point, we can get back to that. Women hating each other over pettiness had been played out years ago.
