ENTITY reports Gabby Douglas speaking out against cyberbullying.

Gabby Douglas, a three-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist, is using her fame to combat cyberbullies and speak up about social media abuse. Douglas was inspired by attacks she received online while competing in the 2016 Rio Games.

Although she received numerous honors at the event for her performance, the Internet threw a slew of hate at the athlete. Users on social media poked fun at her hair and facial expressions along with criticizing her for not putting her hand over her heart for the national anthem.

The targeted posts got so out of hand that it sparked supporters to create a #Love4GabbyUSA hashtag to combat the abuse.

Douglas spoke to the hosts of “Good Morning America” about her experience with the Internet hate and her upcoming involvement with Hack Harassment, which is a collaboration between Intel, Vox Media and the Lady Gaga-founded Born This Way Foundation. The movement seeks to “unite the nonprofit and tech communities to address [online harassment].”

Douglas will be the first Change Ambassador for the organization. On “Good Morning America” she spoke directly to any victims of the online abuse to offer them advice and words of encouragement.

“I just want to say that you are not alone,” Douglas said. “And even though it may seem the world’s against you – and I definitely felt like the world was definitely against me in Rio – I’m here today to tell you that’s not the case.”

She also emphasized the importance of having a support system.

“There are people out there who love you and your life is very valuable and it’s very important, so just stay strong,” she said.

Douglas plans to draw on her personal experience to increase awareness of online attacks and encourage users to speak out against cyberbullying. In a news release, Business Wire detailed the Olympic athlete’s role with the Hack Harassment campaign.

“Through this role, Gabby will champion the initiative’s efforts to elevate the conversation surrounding online harassment and inspire young people to drive real change,” Business Wire wrote. “Leveraging multiple platforms as well as in-person outreach, she will share her story to raise awareness of the dangerous consequences of online harassment and call on youth to commit to change.”

Hack Harassment took to Twitter to share their enthusiasm for Gabby to join the team. They also updated the cover photo on their account to a photo of Gabby on “Good Morning America” promoting her involvement with the cause.

“We are excited to announce that we’re teaming up with @Gabrielledoug to fight #Onlineharassment!” the tweet read. “RT if you’re as excited as we are.”
