Nineteenth-century French novelist George Sand is best known for writing “La Petite Fadette,” “La Mare Au Diable” and “Lélia.” But she’s also famous for her love affair with Frédéric Chopin, her cross dressing and for identifying as bisexual.
After separating from her husband in 1831, Sand engaged in a series of relationships. Her most well-known affair was with Chopin but her most intense relationship was with Marie Dorval, a Parisian actress.
She also started cross dressing, sometimes for fun and sometimes for practical reasons. But it allowed her to get into spaces most women were barred from. Sand also took up smoking in public at that time even though it was seen as a complete deviation from ladylike behavior.
Sand was known to deviate from the norm without fear or regret.
