ENTITY counts Amy Adam's "Nocturnal Animals" as one good thing that happened in 2016.

2017 is only two days away – thank GOD! – but before we kiss off 2016 (or tell it to —- off), it’s important to write down a few REALLY good things that happened this year. There were a few silver linings in the black cloud, after all – and it’s important to acknowledge them:

1 IT WASN’T A GREAT YEAR FOR MOVIES…

…but the few good ones REALLY stood out. Some of ENTITY’s favorites?

  • Tom Ford’s “Nocturnal Animals”
  • Denis Villeneuve’s “Arrival” (both of these two top movies starred the actress of the year, Amy Adams)
  • Kenneth Lonergan’s “Manchester By the Sea”
  • The surprise of the old school but beautifully acted “Hell or High Water,” with another remarkable performance by the incredible Jeff Bridges.

We aren’t the only ones who loved these films either…at least according to Twitter.

While we may have experienced our share of low points in the real world, at least we had some great 2016 movies to use an escape!

2 IT MIGHT HAVE BEEN THE BEST YEAR EVER FOR TV.

Netflix proved it might be the most creative creator of content, with “Stranger Things” and “The Crown,” as well as its ongoing “House of Cards.” Season six of “Game of Thrones” even did something that seemed impossible: it got better. Showtime added another great new show to its already impressive roster – “Billions” – and Damian Lewis used it to reveal yet another side of his expanding repertoire of characters. We can’t forget “Mr. Robot” either, which used 2016 to prove it wasn’t a one-season wonder.

News shows also created plenty of great memories in 2016. Fox’s Megyn Kelly rose to become the most important female newscaster- and looked amazing in her sleek short hair and semi-sexy-but-professional dresses. The late night comics like John Oliver, Seth Meyers, James Cordon and Trevor Noah became certified stars by creating controversial and funny content that went viral – and made Jimmy Fallon look – almost insignificant.

3 MEDITATION WENT MAINSTREAM.

Sitting quietly and tuning out for 20 minutes might not seem like a big culturally significant movement, but meditation studios turned up everywhere in 2016, as did apps, podcasts and books on the ancient practice of tuning out the mind. Beyond that, many scientific studies and articles were published on the health benefits of meditation: less anxiety, less stress, less depression, less overeating, better sleep, better concentration.

4 DIGITAL DETOX GAINED TRACTION.

Scientists, engineers and psychologists started to preach the dangers of spending all your time on your devices and computers. Maybe not all of us complied – and nobody’s attention span is getting any better – but at least, as of 2016, there’s a lot more awareness of how our digital devices can wreak havoc on our peace of mind, focus, and ability to relax and actually talk to people.

5 AND IN A YEAR OF SIGNIFICANT CELEBRITY DEATH, HERE’S WHO SURVIVED:

We’ve got to be grateful for the greats still among us! Mel Brooks, Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Paul McCartney, Betty White, Angela Lansbury, Julie Andrews, Diana Ross, Chubby Checker, Chuck Berry, Jerry Lee Lewis, Norman Lear, Doris Day, Queen Elizabeth II, Jimmy Carter, George H W Bush, Barbara Bush, Jerry Lewis, Kim Novak – and Olivia de Havilland is one hundred years old.

The fact is, we only have two days left of 2016…and too many memories to reflect on from this past year. But why not start out 2017 on a positive note and remember the moments where 2016 truly felt like a pretty decent year?
