Hillary Clinton has revealed she wanted to “curl up [and] never leave the house again” after her crushing presidential defeat.

She described the difficulty of coming to terms with the loss in her first public speech since that post election concession, telling the Children’s Defense Fund gala audience Wednesday,  “I know many of you are deeply disappointed at the results of the election,” she says. “I am too – more than I could ever express.”

Her speech, to the company where she began her career, was also a rallying cry to persevere amid the upcoming Trump administration.

Despite her tangible disappointment, she urged her supporters to remember that “America is worth it.” According to her, the 2016 campaign was never about one person or one election, “it was about the country we love and about building an America that is hopeful, inclusive and big-hearted.”

But in order to do this, she calls on her audience to not lose heart and to “get back up.”

“We have work to do, and for the sake of our children and our families and our country, I ask you to stay engaged, stay engaged on every level,” Hillary Clinton said. “We need you, your energy, your ambition, your talent. That is how we get through this.”
