The first time I tried to do my own makeup, I looked like Ronald McDonald’s third cousin, twice removed.

If you’re in the same boat, fear not because this disastrous cycle will be broken.

The following makeup tutorials will hopefully help alleviate some of your fears. There is no need to watch these tutorials under your sheets. For the closeted beginners out there, you are not alone!

Here are ENTITY’s tips to achieving a natural makeup look. (Good start, right?)

1 Tips to Laying a Good Foundation

Hopefully at this point, you will already have been color matched at Sephora, Ulta Beauty or even Target and have a foundation that works best with your complexion.

Applying foundation should be done on a clean face. Wash it before you start! Make sure to moisturize your face once it is clean. I would use any moisturizer, as long as it is specific for the face.

Applying a primer before your foundation will help diminish the look of big pores and leave a more baby smooth finish.

When using foundation, a little goes a long way, so make sure not to pile it on. Apply it evenly all over the face and into the neck area. Also, using a blending sponge is great if you want to attain a photoshop finish.

2 Contouring Tips

It’s going to be okay! contouring may seem intimidating, but with a little practice, you’ll be a pro in no time. Think of contouring as making areas of your face more dull and making other areas pop.

You’ll want to use a contour stick and start with a brown color that is darker than your foundation. When applying, use the top of your ear to guide you on where to start your line. Then draw an angled line going toward the corner of your lips without going all the way.

The contour line should go through the middle of your cheeks. Then, continue drawing lines or smudges around the perimeter of your forehead, as well as along your jawline. Finally, you’ll want to draw lines along either side of the bridge of your nose.

Add concealer under your eyes, on your forehead and on the bridge of your nose (in the areas that do not already have the brown coloring). Use a blending sponge to blend out all of the harsh lines and leave your face looking defined and beautiful.

3 Eye and Brow Tips

When going for a natural look, less is more when applying eyeshadow, liner and mascara.

As you may have been able to notice, blending is your best friend when doing your makeup. Use eyeshadow shades that are similar to your complexion shade or slightly darker and make sure to blend out any harsh lines. Also, using colors closer to your foundation tone won’t show the imperfections in your makeup as much.

Adding a light color liner to your lower lash line will help brighten your eyes and naturally make your eyes look more awake.

Mascara applies differently on each person, so it may take a few tries to find one that works for you. Waterproof mascara tends to hold a curl better, so keep that in mind when choosing yours.

And lastly, when shaping your eyebrows, try and use a color that is closest to your natural brow color. For example, if your brow color is a lighter brown, don’t use a black/brown pencil to shade in your brows. You’ll end up looking like me when I first started my makeup journey!

Pick. Natural. Colors.

4 Blush & Lip Tips

Don’t forget to apply blush and a cute lip color to add to your natural look. Apply blush while having a smile on your face. And, of course, don’t go in heavy handed, otherwise you will have two pink circles (like Ronald McDonald).

Using a nude lip color or slightly pink lip color keeps the look pretty natural. Using a darker lip gloss or lipstick can make it more obvious that you have makeup on. The more subtle the lip color, the better it will be if you’re going for a natural look.

5 My Favorite: Highlighter Tips!

Don’t forget to highlight! Even when going for a natural look, a little highlight doesn’t hurt. In fact, it makes me feel a little spunky.

Just like all of the other makeup products out there, highlighters are made in different colors. Find one closest to your complexion and gently apply with a brush or your fingers along the top of your cheek bones, above the angled contour line you drew earlier. It will give you a little spark to go along with the one in your eye *wink, wink*.

At the end of the day, don’t be afraid to go for it and start your makeup journey. Like everything else in life, practice makes perfect!
