Captain megan couto is making history at buckingham palace

If you haven’t already heard, Canadian infantry officer Megan Couto just made history… in Britain.

Captain Couto is the first female infantry officer to command the troops guarding the Queen at Buckingham Palace. Couto led 40 Canadian soldiers through the famous Changing of the Guard ceremony on Monday in London.

This comes after the UK government’s plan to open up combat roles to women over a three-year term.

Entity reports on Megan Couto

Couto’s unit was invited to serve as the Queen’s Guard on select dates this summer.  The gesture is a way of celebrating Canada’s 150th anniversary.

The fact that Couto had a chance to lead the historic moment was monumental both for her and women everywhere. In light of that, here are four facts you should know about this badass soldier.

1 She’s part of the 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry.

Couto’s unit, based in Manitoba, Canada, was named after Princess Patricia of Connaught. Seeing as Princess Patricia’s father was Prince Arthur (the third son of Queen Victoria) she had close ties with the Buckingham Palace.

2 She’s truly a revolutionary woman that does.

For years, women in the British Army served on frontline duties. However, they were previously banned from ground combat positions. But as of this past July, that changed.

Now, Couto is the first female infantry officer to command troops guarding the Queen at Buckingham Palace.  Typically, the British Army’s Household Division (largely comprised of males) fills the role of leading the Queen’s Guard. But this year, Couto will take on that position.

4 She’s only 24.

Damn. What were you doing at 24? You’ve got to admit that Megan Couto reaching commanding officer at her young age is pretty impressive. Go Megan!

5 She’s extremely humble.

“I feel very much like I’m just doing my duty. But at the same time I know it’s unique, and a special occasion, and so I’m very grateful and definitely Honored to be given the opportunity.”

The world could use more Megan Couto’s.
