"Pick me, choose me, love me."
“Dark and Twisty” Meredith Grey is the leading lady on the hit medical drama, “Grey’s Anatomy.”
If you’ve never watched the show, you’re definitely missing out on juicy drama and romance. But more importantly, you’re missing out on Meredith Grey.
Grey is the head of general surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital and one of the most badass characters on the show. She’s played by the talented actress, Ellen Pompeo, and we absolutely adore her.
But what makes her such a great character? Well, we’ve listed the most important things that make Meredith Grey the heart and soul of “Grey’s Anatomy.”
Meredith Grey is known for surviving the impossible. She’s survived Literally. Everything.
She’s survived a bomb, drowning, a gun man, the plane crash, a C-section during a power outage and a brutal assault by a patient. After 13 seasons, there’s nothing Meredith Grey hasn’t been through.
Favorite quote about her strength: “We do our very best, but sometimes it’s just not good enough. We buckle our seat belts, we wear a helmet, we stick to the lighted paths, we try to be safe. We try so hard to protect ourselves, but it doesn’t make a damn bit of difference. Because when the bad things come, they come out of nowhere. The bad things come suddenly, with no warning. But we forget that sometimes that’s how the good things come too.”
Her friendship with Cristina was one of a kind. They always had each other’s back, no matter what. Cristina was her “person” and was by her side through everything.
When Christina Yang, played by Sandra Oh, departed from the show, Meredith supported her decision to move across the country. And even after Cristina left, she continued to be loyal to the other characters she’s claimed as family on the show.
Alex Karev became her new “”person and she stood by him during his arrest and everything that came after that. She defends and stands up for every character on the show, no matter what the circumstances are. She’s always there for the people she loves.
Favorite quote proving her loyalty: “We’re friends, real friends. And that means, no matter how long it takes, when you finally decide to look back, I’ll still be here.”
Meredith Grey and Derek Shepherd gave us hope in love, especially when she was willing to sacrifice herself for him. Remember the shooter? Yeah, she told him to shoot her instead.
And after Derek’s death in season 10, it left us all with a hole in our hearts.
Ellen has said before that Derek was the love of Meredith’s life. He was “it.” She doesn’t expect her character to fall in love again, or at least not the kind of love Meredith and Derek had.
Favorite quote about their love: “Your choice. It’s simple – her or me. And I’m sure she’s really great. But Derek, I love you. In a really big pretend to like your taste in music, let you eat the last piece of cheesecake, hold a radio over my head outside your bedroom window, unfortunate way that makes me hate you … love you. So pick me. Choose me. Love me.”
When everything seems to go wrong, tequila is the answer to all your problems. Well, at least it is for Meredith Grey.
If she’s not at Joe’s bar, she’s as home drinking tequila straight from the bottle. We’ve all been there at some point.
Favorite quote about how much she likes tequila: “There’s something about the possibility of more. More tequila, more love, more anything. More is better.”
Throughout the 13 seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy,” Meredith has always referred to herself as “dark and twisty.” (Sure, there have been moments when she’s tried to be optimistic, but she’ll always be our realistic Mer.)
Favorite quote about her outlook on life: “When you’re little, night time is scary because there are monsters hiding under the bed. When you get older the monsters are different. Self doubt, loneliness, regret. And though you may be older and wiser, you still find yourself scared of the dark.”
Well, there you have it. Those are the reasons Meredith Grey is our spirit animal.
If you haven’t watched “Grey’s Anatomy,” we seriously suggest you get on it ASAP. You won’t regret it. The characters will grow on you in a way that you wouldn’t think was possible.
They’ll become family.
