Meet Michael Phelps' leading lady.
Photo via Twitter / @JustJaredMichael Phelps is one of the most well-known Olympians in the world. He’s the most decorated Olympic champion of all time, with a record of 28 career medals. But, who is the woman sticking by his side and cheering him on?
Well, that’s Michael Phelps’ wife, Nicole Johnson.
For those of you who do not know who Michael Phelps’ wife is, don’t worry. Here are five things you should know about his leading lady.
Nicole Johnson started her pageantry career at the age of 17 when she read an advertisement for Miss Teenage California.
She originally signed on to do pageants to try to win a scholarship and ended up winning first runner up. But although she originally did it for the award, she ended it loving it because she found herself feeling more confident and beautiful.
“I love being onstage and competing in pageants,” Johnson told Thousand Oaks Acorn in 2010. “It’s an empowering position to be in, where you’re comfortable in your own skin.”
Johnson has also tried to shut down all the negative stereotypes that come with people who are in the pageant industry.
“People think pageant girls are snotty, cutthroat, self-absorbed,” she told the publication. “Everybody that I meet in the industry is so kind, giving and they are some of the most amazing women.”
She was crowned Miss California in 2010 and came in ninth place in the Miss USA pageant.
And just how she is Michael Phelps number one supporter, he is also always there to support her. When he goes to Nicole’s shows, he makes sure the attention is focused on her and only her.
Phelps took a break from training for the Olympics in 2012 just to be by his wife’s side during her pageant duties. And when she handed off her crown to the next Miss California, Phelps was cheering her on. “I’m here for one reason and one reason only,” Phelps told E! News. “Nicole.”
Nicole Johnson has beauty and brains.
The 32-year-old graduated with honors from the University of Southern California in 2007. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in communications with a concentration in sports and entertainment.
Which makes sense because Johnson has a passion for cars.
Nicole Johnson used to work at Mercedes-Benz dealership in 2009. She took the position to pursue a career in communications while also being surrounded by her passion.
Outside of cars, Nicole also loves jewelry. In fact, according to her LinkedIn profile she’s also an “accredited jewelry professional” through the Gemological Institute of America.
Currently, though, Nicole does marketing for Michael Phelps’s foundation and also helps promote Phelps’s MP swim products, according to Cosmopolitan.
According to The New York Times, Phelps was presenting an award alongside race car driver Danica Patrick. Nicole, on the other hand, was an usher and guided athletes to their seats.
She was assigned to usher Phelps to his seat but wasn’t so thrilled about it. “I really wanted to escort Travis Pastrana,” she said, referring to the motorsports and action sports star.
But apparently, it was love at first sight. “Michael and I just completely hit it off,” she said. They were reportedly a couple within days.
Well, she wasn’t kidding when she said they hit it off. Good for them!
Before she became Michael Phelps wife, the couple had an on and off relationship for eight years. They started dating in 2007 but reportedly broke it off in 2011 and remained friends.
Phelps has been open about his past struggles of dealing with depression and going to rehab after his DUI arrest in 2014. But according to The Baltimore Sun, he reconciled with his father and Nicole.
Phelps told USA Today, that Nicole was the one he loved the most.
“Her and I have been on and off for eight years. It’s been a long time,” he said. “We’ve been through a lot. But I love her to death. We’ve been able to grow as a couple through everything we’ve been through, the positive changes I’ve made in my life.”
The couple rekindled their romance in 2014 and were engaged a year later. Nicole Johnson became Michael Phelps’ wife in 2016 when they secretly tied the knot before the Rio Olympics.
Nicole Johnson and Michael Phelps found out they were pregnant before they tied the knot. Now, the two are the proud parents of a one-year-old boy named Boomer.
And they should be proud. Their son already has more followers on Instagram than I’ll ever have in my lifetime. They started documenting his life on Instagram and he’s already up to 795 thousand followers. Phelps says one of his greatest joys in life is watching his son grow up.
Michael Phelps told ET, “For me, watching Boomer every day and watching him grow up literally in front of my eyes … it’s really awesome. Now he’s at the point where he’s racing around the house, just walking around, running, you name it, holding my hand and dragging me all over the house.”
Well, we sure can’t wait to see him grow up. He may be the next generation’s Michael Phelps.
Overall, though, Nicole Johnson is more than Michael Phelps wife. She is a strong and intelligent woman who made a career for herself through hard work and dedication. And here at ENTITY, we admire that and wish her and her family nothing but luck.
