It isn’t truly the autumn season until those sickeningly sweet orange, white and yellow candies start popping up. In fact, candy corn is one of the most popular Halloween treats that people often have a love or hate relationship with. For the candy corn lovers, Oct. 30 marks the time to celebrate National Candy Corn Day.

This national holiday shares its day with Mischief Night, the night before Halloween where pranksters put the trick in trick-or-treat.

But for those of you looking to just relax and celebrate the tasty holiday, ENTITY’s here to help. Here are five candy corn dessert options that are perfect for the Halloween season.

First, let’s start with Candy Corn’s history.

George Renninger created candy corn in the 1880s for the Wunderle Candy Company in Pennsylvania.

However, the Goelitz Confectionery Company, who is now known as Jelly Belly, took over production as we moved into the 20th century. While it may sound like a funny name today, they called the candy “Chicken Feed.” Their tagline on their merchandise read, “Something worth crowing for.”

But why did the manufacturers go with a chicken theme for their candy? Candy corn is meant to mimic kernels of corn with its white, orange and yellow pattern. Which all makes sense, because chickens can’t get enough of the yellow vegetable.

Are there any other Candy Corn facts you should know?

Candy corn is made from sugar, fondant, corn syrup, vanilla flavor and marshmallow creme. The ingredients are then melted down before being molded into kernels with cornstarch. Once the individual candies form in their trays and cool, they are glazed with edible wax to make them shine.

As candy corn has evolved, so has its original color pattern. The candy is now available in different patterns, based on holidays outside of Halloween. For example, you can find green, white and red candy corn around Christmas.

And for those of you who like to point out how everything is so expensive nowadays, you’ll get a kick out of this next fact. In the 1950s, candy corn was only 25 cents a pound. Today, a pound of candy corn sells for around $4 to $5.

Also, a single serving of candy corn, which is considered 19 pieces, contains 140 calories, 0 grams of fat and 32 grams of sugar. This makes it one of the healthier Halloween options.
