Why comedian and "Ghostbusters" actress Leslie Jones reporting at the 2016 Rio Olympic games is important for women.

Leslie Jones strikes again. The “Ghostbusters” star managed to score herself a seat at the Olympics after her Twitter feed attracted thousands of women and men following the Olympics-obsessed comedian. According to Entertainment Weekly, Jones was officially invited by NBC to attend the 2016 Rio Olympics and continue her trending commentary there.

After taking a break from social media following the online abuse she received with the “Ghostbusters” release, the female actress has made her return to the delight of her many fans.

Jones is just one of many victims of social media attacks. Unsatisfied with her role in the Blockbuster remake, moviegoers turned to Twitter to express their opinions of her performance. The Denver Post said that “Twitter users hurled racist slurs, compared the comic actress to the gorilla recently killed at the Cincinnati Zoo and sent Jones obscene pictures.”

Jones’s response was to take a break from her Twitter account and let the negative chatter calm down.

Weeks later, Jones made a huge comeback to social media with her enthusiastic Olympic-themed tweets and videos. Dressed in all-American flag attire, the celeb’s live tweets confirmed that she was Team USA’s number one fan.

On August 6, Jones tweeted, “Damn I need five tvs I can’t catch every event!” Her cheers and screams of encouragement have earned her a growing fanbase on Twitter, amassing thousands of new followers in only days.

Jones’s hilarious feed eventually got back to NBC Olympics executive producer Jim Bell. According to Reuters, Bell approached Jones by tweeting, “You’re officially invited to Rio. Want to come?” Jones’s response was a video cheering “RIO BOUND BABY USA! USA!!”

It appears that Jones has bounced back, not allowing any previous abuse online stop her from supporting the red, white and blue. When critics blew up Jones’ Twitter account with negativity, she made the decision to sign out of her account, she told USA Today.

Taking a break rather than deleting her Twitter account revealed Jones’ power in handling the situation calmly with elegance. Her return to social media displays that she did not let her critics’ negativity shatter her cheery optimism.

Jones’ inspirational return epitomizes the phrase, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”
