Entity discusses the popular new trend of period panties.

Ever since period panties that could replace tampons were introduced, I was curious.

Could these so-called “period panties” that look like regular underwear really keep you from leaking? Are these underwear really reliable enough to not wear a tampon and remain leak-free?

So after continuous research, we learned that there are two types of period underwear. One that helps hold pads in place and one that helps absorb leakage and replace tampons for your lighter days.

Period Panties that hold pads in place

The first of these undies were invented by Crystal Etienne when she went online to look for panties that held pads in place and couldn’t find one. Etienne couldn’t believe there wasn’t anything on the market so she decided to take matters into her own hands and help all women out.

She was in the lingerie business before, so she was familiar with this market. The idea was simple, it is a pair of regular underwear that has a slot for the pad. Etienne said that even with such a simple idea, she had trouble convincing male designers and manufacturers that it could be a success.

She made a successful career from her first bikini and hipster period panties to now, a body suit. She showed them who’s boss.

Period Panties that replace tampons

The two most popular brands are Dear Kate which targets lighter days and THINX which aims to replace tampons altogether. Compared to Etienne’s panties, these rely on more advanced elements. Both use the same method, special fabric to pull liquid away from the body and absorb it to keep it from leaking out.

Julie Sygiel was a chemical engineering student who established Dear Kate. Her product is made of three layers made of microfiber polyester, nylon and lycra and topped off with a liquid repellent finish. The Dear Kate underwear can hold up to three teaspoons of liquid.

THINX was created by Miki Agrawal. THINX underwear are made of breathable urethane. They offer different styles of underwear ranging from hip hugger briefs for heavy days to thongs for lighter days.

We already have so much to deal with when Aunt Flo is in town, including cramps, body pains and headaches, it would be such a bonus not to have to worry about changing our tampon every few hours.

Since then, more companies have come out with period panties and you can find a pair basically anywhere.

Check out Walmart or Amazon. Oh and all of these underwear are reusable!
