You love food and you regularly cook Asian cuisine on your free time. Also, your favorite TV shows are “MasterChef,” “Chopped” and “Cupcake Wars.” And even if you’ve been following these shows for years, you’re still amazed by how artistic chefs plate their dishes.

Face it, you’re just not up for the “standard” academic course after high school. So, why don’t you opt to continue your education on a different path? Take that love for food and turn it into a career!

Whether it’s a love for the main courses, the desserts or both, pursuing a career in culinary arts is a great way to combine fun, never-ending learning and education all in one! And let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to be around food all day?

Before you get started at making some bomb food, here are a few things you should consider before jumping into your new culinary career.

1 CULINARY ARTS SCHOOL OR COOKING SCHOOL

It’s best to decide which type of school you want to attend- a culinary school or a cooking school. According to Culinary Schools, culinary artists are responsible for making dishes look just as beautiful as they taste, whereas cooking schools focus on the techniques and sciences of cooking.

2 LOCATION

Be sure to research the location of the school you want to attend before you begin the application process. If your school is located near a big city with exquisite restaurants, chances are you will have access to some fine dining to better understand the different types of food. You can even apply to work at a fancy restaurant part-time to see how the restaurant operation works.

3 PROGRAMS

Don’t get too caught up applying to any and every school that pops up on your Google search engine. Make sure the school has the program you really want to focus on. Not all schools provide the same programs and you don’t want to study something for years and not have a passion for that specific branch of culinary arts.

4 DEGREES

Not all schools offer Bachelor’s Degrees – some offer only Associate’s Degrees and certifications. Be sure that your school offers the highest level you want to achieve! (Bonus: Bachelor’s degrees in Culinary can take as little as three years!)

5 FLEXIBILITY

Some schools do have course requirements for their students to follow and others are more flexible in letting their students choose when they want to take their classes. Make sure it all works with your schedule to avoid having to drop classes and waste money.

Now that you’ve honed in on which school you’re going to attend and what you want to learn, you’re set! Submit that application and soon enough you’ll be on your way to creating some exquisite cuisine!

According to Career Realism, some benefits of attending a Culinary Art school are earning a great salary, traveling the world, and in some cases even becoming your own boss!
