Entity reports on this sexist North Carolina billboard that has sparked outrage online.

A North Carolina billboard has the internet up in arms over its shockingly sexist message.

“Real men provide. Real women appreciate it,” reads the billboard, which is situated along a busy interstate.

Bill Whiteheart of Whiteheart Outdoor Advertising – the company behind the billboard – refuses to reveal who commissioned it. “We’re not supportive of or in opposition to the message. We’re just the messenger,” he told CNN, as if there should be no responsibility for giving something so sexist a platform.

The anonymous group who rented the billboard spent a whopping $2,000 to offend North Carolina residents for the entire month – though apparently have the option to renew for even longer.

Molly Grace, a local business owner, has organized a protest of the billboard for Sunday. She created an event for it on Facebook titled, “Saying NOPE to this: a protest against what this sign represents, with better signs.”

As you know, the billboard outrage was sparked because the existence of the board itself serves as AN EXAMPLE of and A REMINDER that this way of thinking still exists, loud and proud in our country. There are sexist people, and we still live in a culture that accepts that. Even loudly, as we are learning,” the event reads, with Grace adding, “So we certainly will rally on Sunday.”

Many have also taken to Whiteheart Outdoor Advertising Facebook page to leave poor reviews and call Bill out for allowing the disgusting billboard to be posted. Men and women alike raged against the message, with Tommy Gunn posting, “These people can say they just ‘rented the space,’ but they had every right to say no to the misogynist message sprawled across, demeaning women’s value.”

And a website has popped up allowing people to edit the sexist billboard, filling in their own choices in place of “provide” and “appreciate.” It encourages everyone to post their results online with the hashtag “#RealMenBillboard.”

Of course, wherever there is someone standing up for the apparently radical belief that men and women should be equal, trolls are sure to follow. They’ve flocked to the protest’s Facebook group, spouting insults such as, “stupid liberals.”

So while there’s no resolution in sight for the people of North Carolina, you can bet they’ll be out there protesting on Sunday – one way or the other.
