In terms of leading ladies in transgender rights, Janet Mock definitely makes the top 10 list. As an American author, TV host and magazine editor, she is in constant motion. But what does the general public know about Janet Mock besides her gender transition?

Here are a few lesser-known facts about Janet Mock.

1 Her brother is a Canadian football star.

In November of 2015, Janet married her boyfriend of five years in Hawaii. The ceremony was held just minutes away from where she grew up.

Janet wrote an article for the magazine Brides about the beautiful event: “The whole day was a statement on the transformative power of being seen for who you really are and being loved not despite your past and experiences, but because of it.”

3 She struggles with the “trans advocate” label.

Although Janet Mock has spoken at countless universities and organizations about her story, she does not always feel comfortable about the lectures she is asked to give. She spoke to the New York Times about this difficult inner conflict: “We cannot use my single experience because all it does is flatten everyone else’s experience and turns us into a monolith.”

Janet did not want to be seen as the default example for all trans young adults. She is constantly emphasizing the diversity of the trans community, and how the media often neglects this diversity.

4 She started the social media hashtag #GirlsLikeUs.

Janet spoke to Levo about beginning her own hashtag for trans women empowerment. She would love the hashtag to inspire smaller groups of trans women to network with one another: “I would love to have a weekend getaway for trans girls where I can connect them to mentors, to other living examples of possibility of what their lives could look like.”

5 She writes three pages every morning for inspiration.

In an exclusive interview with Fast Company, Janet Mock revealed her secret methods to gaining creative inspiration. The technique is three freehand pages a morning, just to clear her head of any mental obstacles. “And then the next thing is obviously caffeine,” she admitted. “And Twitter.”

So basically, Janet Mock is killin’ it. American transgender teens are fortunate to have such a powerful role model to look up to.
