DocuSign, a global provider of electronic signature software, offers businesses with more than just the ease of managing documents in the cloud. Fewer hard copies means less paper consumption, an environmental perk.

Today’s advances in technology allow businesses and their consumers to take advantage of the many ways documents can be created, tracked, and managed. However, because important documents usually require a signature as verification of legitimacy, they often need to be printed out and then faxed, scanned, or delivered via mail. These actions occur every day across the world, introducing problems pertaining to mass paper and fuel consumption.

DocuSign, a global electronic signature software company, is able to lessen documents’ environmental impact and prevent excess material waste by providing their clients with the ability to ditch their old school pen-and-paper procedures and electronically sign documents via the Internet. At the time of a July 2011 press release, DocuSign had processed more than half a billion documents for its customers. DocuSign says this technology allows them to continually improve business processes while also making them greener. According to founder and Chief Strategy Officer Tom Gonser, DocuSign “makes the world better by giving businesses new freedom to send, sign, track and store documents in the cloud – all while reducing the environmental impact for all types and sizes of organizations around the globe.”

The inherent benefits include decreased contract cycle time and costs while improving document management and customer satisfaction. In fact, DocuSign estimates that the volume of paper saved due to their product offering can save tens of thousands of trees each year, as well as millions in printing costs and billions in shipping charges.

In celebration of their environmental stewardship, DocuSign has partnered with the Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit focused on the conservation of trees globally. DocuSign anticipates that their growth of 150,000 signed documents and over a million pages of documents processed each day will help them reach their goal to preserve one million square feet of rain forest. At a growth of approximately 45,000 new users each day, their positive impact could be extremely powerful on the environment and global sustainability.
