Though seaside beaches like Malibu and Miami may get all the love, there are many beautiful lakes throughout the U.S that boast some stunning beaches as well. Plan your next weekend trip at one of these freshwater gems!
Along the border of California and Nevada lies the sandy shores of Lake Tahoe. Lined with plentiful beaches that are perfect for swimming, the calm waters of this lake are perfect for kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding.
“Sebago Lake is the place in Maine for all kinds of boating, and the beaches are perfect for swimming and picnicking,” says Buzzfeed. In addition, there are various hiking and biking trails surrounding the park.
Nestled in the heart of the Midwest, Indiana probably doesn’t immediately come to mind as a beach destination. However, according to the National Park Service: “Whether it’s enjoying a summer sunset stroll or marveling at the arctic beauty of Lake Michigan’s shelf ice, you can enjoy the beach in all seasons.”
“Long a family favorite known for beautiful woodlands and a placid 108-acre lake in the heart of the mountains, Hungry Mother has a sandy beach with bathhouse, boat rentals (fishing, canoe, kayak and paddle), a boat launch and a universally accessible fishing pier,” says virginia.gov. Guests can also enjoy its cabins, gift shops, visitor center, restaurant, and campgrounds.
According to utah.com: “The Great Salt Lake and its islands provide outstanding scenery and recreational opportunities in northern Utah. Sunsets over the lake can be breathtaking. Amazing red, orange, lavender and magenta hues slowly dissolve in the evening sky.” The lake surrounds Antelope Island, which itself is home to an incredible array of wildlife, including antelopes, bison, and birds.
