ENTITY gives you their five favorite breakup songs by Adele.Photo via Instagram / @adele

We all have different coping mechanisms when it comes to getting over a breakup. Some of us head straight to the ice cream, while others go out with friends. But there is one thing we all do: sob it out over sad breakup songs.

Even if you’re not going through heartbreak, sometimes you just need the emotional catharsis of a really good breakup song. There are so many heart-wrenching tunes out there and Adele has written a lot of them. In fact, it was a breakup that sparked her super successful career  (after all, they say success is the best revenge). Very few artists have made feeling sad sound so good.

So in honor of the queen of heartbreak, here is a countdown of Adele’s top five tear-jerking breakup songs.

5 First Love

First of all, it’s nearly impossible not to be in your feels when listening to Adele’s music. This Adele breakup song comes from her debut album, 19. The album title captures all the raw emotions and experiences she was going through when she wrote and recorded these songs at the tender age of 19. Adele continued this “growing with time” theme throughout each of her follow-up albums.

Sometimes you just need to move on for the sake of your own happiness. Moving on appears to be the message of her lyrics about her first encounter with young love. The majority of her songs revolve around falling in and out of love.

Most Heart-Wrenching Lyric:  Excuse me first love, but we’re through. I need to taste a kiss from someone new.”

4 Don’t You Remember

This breakup song from Adele’s second album, 21, tells the tale of unrequited love and the many unanswered questions that come with this feeling.

She sings about the pain of not knowing if her ex is thinking about her. Obviously, she is still thinking of him…hence the song.

Most Heart-Wrenching Lyric: “When was the last time you thought of me? Or have you completely erased me from your memory?”

3 Hello

This ballad of a breakup song showcases Adele’s well-known vocal range. “Hello” is from her fourth album, “25.”

This song is about the distance time naturally creates between two people. It also shows another side of Adele; instead of singing about being the heartbroken one, she sings about being the heartbreaker. Breaking someone else’s heart can be just as painful as being the heartbroken one. Breakup songs like “Hello” remind us that ending a relationship is usually difficult for both sides.

Most Heart-Wrenching Lyric:  “They say time’s supposed to heal ya, but I ain’t done much healing.”

2 Send My Love (To Your New Lover)

Also from her album “25,” “Send my Love” is a collaboration with the talented Swedish pop producer Max Martin. The message still comes from Adele’s heart. The song’s theme of finding a new lover and sending a message to the one that left is reminiscent of some of her older songwriting.

However, the production of this makes it more of an empowering anthem for all the warrior women in the world. Phrases like “forgiven it all” and “you set me free” ring true in this catchy song. You can’t help but look back on Adele’s personal growth. Adele is aware she is no longer a young lover which shows how she has grown from all of her relationship experiences. Not to mention, the instrumentals and beat in this song will make you want to get up and bust a move.

Most Heart-Wrenching Lyric:  “Send my love to your new lover. Treat her better.

1 Someone Like You

To say this song is a good breakup song is an understatement. It’s an epic breakup song!

This song is on just about every list of best breakup songs. Adele’s songs never fail to get under your skin in both the worst and best ways. Her raw, powerful voice is filled with honest heartache and its what keeps her fans true throughout the years.

Most Heart-Wrenching Lyric: I guess she gave you things I didn’t give to you.”

Adele’s love songs will forever have you thinking about all your past loves. And remember, it takes time to heal from a breakup. So, don’t feel pressure to rush the grieving process…especially when heartbreak sounds this good!
