Tyler Perry, born Emmett Perry Jr., is an actor, comedian, filmmaker, songwriter, screenwriter, entrepreneur and philanthropist. What doesn’t he do?
And with girlfriend Gelila Bekele, who is a model, social activist and filmmaker herself, they’ve pretty much taken over the entertainment industry.
But how much is this 77-year old worth? According to Celebrity Net Worth, the Tyler Perry net worth is at $600 million. After growing up in a home surrounded by poverty and abuse, you can bet Perry worked hard for his success.
But if you’re wondering how, exactly, Tyler Perry acquired his net worth, here’s a breakdown.
According to Celebrity Net Worth, Perry makes anywhere from $100 to $150 million per year from this empire. In December 2013, he became the first director ever to have five films open no. 1 at the box office. Thirteen of his most famous movies made more than $600 million, but cost only $10 million to make. Since Perry is the producer, writer, director and actor in almost all of his movies, he takes home a majority of the profits.
His films based off of the Madea character are his legacy. “Madea Goes to Jail” made more than $95 million alone and “Madea’s Witness Protection” made more than $65 million. From “Boo! A Madea Halloween” to “A Madea Christmas,” Perry’s movies gross millions of dollars the box office.
He’s also the creator of seven TV shows, including “Love Thy Neighbor,” “The Haves and Have Nots,” “If Loving You Is Wrong” and “For Better or For Worse,” which is premiering on Oprah’s network, OWN.
And according to Bankrate, his plays sold over $100 million in tickets and $30 million in merchandise.
According to Architectural Digest, Perry sold his French Provincial-style home in Atlanta, Georgia for a record-breaking $17.5 million. He broke Atlanta’s record for most expensive residential sale.
The manor sat on 17 park-like acres with nine bedrooms, seven bathrooms, five and a half bathrooms and was over 34,000 square feet. The Los Angeles Times reported that his new home is even bigger than his Atlanta villa.
According to Coastal Living, Perry owns a private island near White Bay Cay island in the Bahamas. The island reportedly cost $6.4 million to purchase. He also told People magazine that he bought the island as a 40th birthday present to himself.
Honestly, that’s goals.
Perry owns a 330-acre studio on the historic Fort McPherson Army base in Atlanta, according to the L.A. Times. Indie Wire reported that the studio cost a whopping $100 million.
This makes Perry the first African-American to own a major film studio.
Along with his car collection that includes a Rolls Royce, Perry owns a Gulfstream III private jet.
The jet is worth $125 million and includes three HD LCD screens, Blu-ray players, satellite TV, theater lighting, iPod docking stations and computer video ports. Right when you thought he couldn’t be living a more luxurious life, he keeps outdoing himself.
