Interesting Stats About UTIs

Over three million people within the U.S. experience UTIs every year, with over 8.1 million visits to the doctors’ office each year. It is most common in women because of our anatomy, since women have a shorter urethra, which is closer to the anus. Therefore the bacteria have a shorter distance to travel before reaching the bladder.

Over 50 percent of women in the world experience or will experience a UTI before they die. Twenty to 30 percent of those 50 percent will experience it again.

It can be caused by many things in our day-to-day life. However, most of the time it is cured within a few days.

What is a UTI?

A UTI is an infection to any of the organs in the urinary system such as the bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis), or the kidney (pyelonephritis). It is also known as bacterial inflammation.

Causes of UTIs

UTI’s are caused by many things in our everyday lives such as sex, feminine products, dietary additives, dehydration, changing of birth control, uncontrolled diabetes, kidney stones, constipation, bad personal hygiene, pregnancy and menopause.

More information:

Sex  can be a very fun and healthy part of a woman’s daily life, unless she is not careful. During sex, bacteria is not only introduced to the woman’s urinary track, but it is also transferred — meaning that sex is one of the biggest commonly known ways to get a UTI.

Eighty percent of women in their late 40s (pre-menopause) get a UTI within less that 24 hours of having sex. Having more than one sexual partner increases the chance of obtaining a UTI.

*In rare cases women can also get a UTI during sexual activity due to an allergic reaction to their partner’s sperm.*

Pregnancy highly increases the chance of a urinary infection in weeks 6-24, due to the changes the urinary tract undergoes.

Infection is caused by the uterus growing and blocking the drainage of urine from the bladder as well as the increased weight from the growing uterus.

Feminine products   can also be an issue since they sometimes contain harsh chemicals and toxins which enter our vagina. It only takes 26 seconds for the chemicals and toxins to enter our bloodstream.

Pads do not allow the body to “breath” and are just a nesting ground for bacteria to spread. All of that bacteria can add up depending on how many times a day you change your pad.

Dehydration is also a huge cause of UTIs due to the stress and suffering the body creates for itself because of the lack of water.

“Lack of water places undue stress of the heart, immune system and kidneys,” said Dr. Judson Bandeis. Without water the body can’t function properly, leaving the immune system lacking the resources it needs. Due to this, bacteria that would normally be flushed out is instead built up and multiplied within the urinary tract.

Ways to Avoid UTIs

Peeing before and/or after sex flushes your system and helps all of the bacteria empty out. Also, urinating whenever you feel like peeing is best. Not holding it in will help to get rid of stress on the urinary tract.

Keeping good hygiene also helps. For example, changing underwear and pantyhose every day and whenever they get dirty or unwearable. Don’t sit too long in wet bathing suits, athletic apparel, etc.

Keeping both the vagina and the anus clean (while also making sure any sexual partner remains hygienic as well). Do NOT wipe back to front because it causes UTIs.

Avoid soaking in a bathtub for over 30 minutes. Also avoid strong soaps, douches, antiseptic creams and finally, feminine wipes, powders and sprays.

UTI Quick Information: “Cranberries contain proanthocyanidins, which are thought to prevent bacteria from sticking to the bladder, and I do believe they work,” Kimberly Cooper, MD said. She is a urologist at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center.

Drinking a lot of water always helps the body. It is also helpful for someone either trying to avoid a UTI or who has a UTI. This helps flush out the urinary tract.

It is recommended to drink anywhere between six to eight glasses of water per day. Eliminating fruit juice (which contains lots of sugar), caffeine, alcohol and sugary drinks also helps.
