He was running through the six with his woes.
Aubrey Drake Graham, better known as the famous Drake, is the Canadian rapper who only knows how to churn out bop after bop.
His 2017 mixtape, “More Life,” debuted No. 1 on the Billboard 200, and “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” from 2015 featured some amazing hits, such as “Energy” and “10 Bands.”
Aside from the great beats, Drake’s also known to coin some popular terms. We know you’ve probably used the term “yolo” once or twice. And if you have, great. But some people are still left wondering what “woes” from “Know Yourself” even means.
So before you blast a karaoke version of the song, here’s what we found out.
No, he’s not talking about running through Toronto with his sorrows and distress – although, his lyrics prove otherwise. In fact, Urban Dictionary defines “running through the six with my woes” as, “Going through your neighborhood carrying your problems and sorrows; yet, still surviving.”
But that’s not how Drake defines this word.
In an interview with Noisey, VICE’s music magazine, he told them what “woes” really means.
“Woe is my crew. It stands for ‘working on excellence.’ It’s just my whole brand and my whole movement and my way of life for everyone.” Drake said. “I want everyone to work on excellence. So, all my friends are my Woes and I feel anybody working on excellence in life is a Woe in life as well.”
Ultimately, it’s not at all what we expected.
But as emotional as Drake may be, he’s also known to be his own hype man. He dedicated “Started from the Bottom” to his career journey. He “started from the bottom” and now he’s killing the rap game. I guess starring on a popular Canadian show is “the bottom,” but we feel you, Drake.
And although “running through the six with my working on excellence” makes absolutely no sense, it’s a good motto to live by.
With all of his random terms and slang words, Drake is onto something we’re not.
The idea of taking over your neighborhood with your friends who are working on their excellence is the ultimate example of friends supporting each other.
So let’s answer our beginning question, what does woes mean? Well, “running through the 6 with my woes” signifies the concept of surrounding yourself with people who excel in life as a form of motivation.
Sure, Drake is known to be emotional and sappy. But even more than that, he believes in supporting his crew. He must be doing something right, right?
