The “Being Mary Jane” new season (season five) will most likely release in 2018. After the Gabrielle Union Lawsuit and the BET’s “well within our rights” spiel, a renewal didn’t seem to be a part of the cards for the show.

However, now that we know the show is back on track, here’s what we want to go down.

1 A Nuclear Family for Mary Jane to Call Her Own

We’d actually prefer it if “Being Mary Jane” season one episode one just faded in with Mary Jane bottle-feeding her baby as she practices her next segment for Good Morning America in the mirror. But the chances of that happening are zero to none. So, we’d settle for the season developing her pregnancy storyline.

Since the Mary Jane episodes per season have expanded from 10 to 20, that should be more than enough time to make it happen.

Ever since season two, we’ve been teased with Mary Jane having children. She has a great and wonderful family. We love them to death! However, Mary Jane’s whole purpose behind moving to New York was to get a fresh start – to begin to make her own traditions and be without her family.

It’s time for her life to move forward. Now that she has the anchor position she’s always dreamed about, it’s time to give her the baby she’s always dream about, too.

2 Mary Jane Demanding More than an Anchor Chair

In all of the “Being Mary Jane” episodes from season one episode one to season four episode ten, Mary Jane has had one goal: be lead anchor on a hit show. Now that she’s done this, we’d like her to think bigger.

She was leaning the right way at the end of season three, during her re-awakening. Anchor fame sounds great, but helping the culture sounds better.

It’s time for her to think big and think about producing her own show or creating her own network. Oprah did it, didn’t she? And before everyone gets mad about the Oprah comparison, we’re not saying she’s as amazing as Oprah. We’re saying Oprah was a woman who aimed for the stars and landed in the milky way. Why can’t Mary Jane? It doesn’t have to happen in the beginning of season five, but this would also be a great story to develop throughout the season.

3 More Narrative for the Family or More Daring Stories for Mary Jane and her Brother

“Being Mary Jane” season four has definitely been one for the books.

But, the focus on the family has obviously been absent from the narrative. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it makes Mary Jane’s stories seem to drag a bit. Too much happens in such a short time that mistakes get repeated and the characters make bad, predictable decisions to give the show some drama that needs to be played out.

We hate to say it, but “Being Mary Jane” episodes have become monotonous. Same old mistakes, just a different episode.

To remedy this, either we should go back to exploring the family and their drama in relation to MJ to take up some of that screen time. Or Mary Jane should do more exciting things than go to work, cry and stress about a man, cry and stress about work, rinse and repeat.

4 A Stable, Long-term Relationship for Mary Jane

This would remedy the monotonous issue of stories in the extended “Being Mary Jane” episodes.

Mary Jane has never had a long-term stable relationship. It’s always been one problem after another with the man, her confidence, her emotions, etc. If you give her a long-term relationship, it opens the door for different stories.

A new baby could enter the picture. (Although, we do acknowledge that a man isn’t necessary for that.)

But if there were a man and baby in her life, issues with deciding on a house together, marriage plans and/or prenuptial (dis)agreements could occur. Maybe they could focus on the trials of a blended family or the reality of work getting in the way of their couple-time. Not every relationship problem has to be a make or break situation.

“Being Mary Jane” season four is beginning to explore this nuance in the Lee relationship, but it keeps getting interrupted with make-or-break disagreements.

5 Niecy Keeping her shit together

In “Being Mary Jane” season four Episode 11, TVGuide hints that Niecy leaves Atlanta to get her mind right. This makes complete sense after the whole “I just lost all my money because I’m still acting like a child” club incident.

Since the beginning of season one, Niecy has had an extreme problem getting her life together. It’s about time some development occurs. And it looks like it will finally happen in the second half of season four.

Now, all we need in season five is for Niecy to keep her mind right. She can’t continue taking one step forward just to take two steps back. It’s time we explore a story when Niecy gets her life together without the help of a man. She needs to move out of her grandparents’ house and make a home for her children. Let’s try something new with her character.

Overall, we simply want to see progress in “Being Mary Jane” season five. No more of the same tropes with the same consequences; it’s time the show shakes something up and gets out of their formulaic routine.
