Entity answers the question, "Who is Angelica Pronto?" and shares 5 fun facts about this ENTITY writer!

If you’ve been perusing our site, then you may have already come across one of our ENTITY writers, Angelica Pronto.

From pop culture articles about Beyoncé to interesting features about Skirt Club’s very own Genevieve LeJeune to more serious articles about the women of ISIS, Angelica’s covered it all for ENTITY.  But who is she, exactly?

Well, now’s your chance to get to know her. Get ready to meet your new online BFF.

Here are five things to know about ENTITY writer, Angelica Pronto.

1 She got her start at University of California, San Diego.

Any other California grads out there? Pronto graduated from USCD with a major in Literature/Writing. UCSD’s Literature program is especially well-known for its cultural department. Not only does the department focus on giving students a multi-cultural experience, it also welcomes authors from all over the world to participate in its quarterly “New Writing Series.”

“I wouldn’t trade my experience in the UCSD literature department for anything.” Pronto told ENTITY. “Thanks to the faculty and the students, I studied in a place that encouraged and celebrated critical thinking about the implications of gender, race and sexuality – all things I hold with greater value than I did before.”

But on top of that, Pronto also admitted that she enjoyed the department for its fun writing workshops. Some of her favorites include experimental writing, travel writing and Latin American detective fiction.

2 She wrote a creative undergraduate thesis about postmodern feminist fiction and the experiences of second-generation Filipina-American women.

Her short story, “PAPAYAS,” is, as she explained to ENTITY, “a pastiche of feminist and peminist (pilipina feminism) theory, queer theory and post-modern writing practices.” Pronto drew her inspirations from authors like Kathy Acker, Theresa Cha, Lucy Corin and Cristy Road – all of whom have experimented with disjointed writing styles and have repurposed language to challenge traditional binaries.

“Feminist theory continues to seek the answer to the question of whether or not it is possible for the female subject to resist the cultural, familial and mythical structures that frame her,” Pronto explained. “Roasa, my main character, is my answer to that question. The very core of ‘PAPAYAS’ examines the main constituents Roasa uses to identify herself. The first is her culture as a Filipina-American. Then it’s her sexuality as a bisexual woman brought up in a Christian household. And last, I look at her gender-roles as a second-generation immigrant.”

Through Roasa, Pronto explores questions like: “Are you allowed to identify yourself? How do others shape the way you identify yourself? And is it possible to rebel against the structures that frame you?” According to her, “PAPAYAS” is meant to give readers a way to understand and engage with the experiences of those who often find themselves outside of traditional dichotomies.

“I am arguing against the dichotomies currently dictating the ‘right way’ to be a woman or the ‘right way’ to be anything at all,” she added.

If you’ve been looking for a feminist scholar you can relate to, look no further than Pronto.

3 If you haven’t guessed already, she’s an intersectional feminist.

If that undergraduate thesis didn’t give it away, Pronto is a dedicated intersectional feminist. As a queer woman of color herself, she knows how gender, sexuality and race all work together to affect the way people experience their lives.

And because of these beliefs, Pronto 100 percent believes in ENTITY’s mission statement to empower women from all walks of life.

She’s one of the original writers who interned with ENTITY in San Diego back in 2016. It’s just proof that you never know where an internship could lead … and another reason young women in Los Angeles should apply for ENTITY’s upcoming summer mentorship program.

But since working full-time, what has Angelica Pronto been up to?

Pronto first worked as a staff writer, covering politics and celebrities. Now, however, she’s taken on another role as the in-house SEO-expert-in-training. You can never have too many skills when you’re working at ENTITY.

4 She’s a proud cat mom.

Move over Taylor Swift; there’s a new cat mama in town. Pronto proudly dotes over her little bundle of joy, Kovu, which she shares with her partner. Kovu even enjoys saying hello to the rest of the ENTITY team during online training sessions and virtual meetings.

Not totally convinced? Peeking at Pronto’s Twitter account will change your mind. As she writes in one tweet, “My level of obsession for this black blob is honestly kind of ridiculous.” And, I mean, her “blob” of a cat is pretty adorable so we don’t blame her for laying on the love.
