ENTITY answers the popular fan question: Who Is Judy Moncada?PHOTO VIA INSTAGRAM/@LACRISPETICA

Queen-pin Judy Moncada from “Narcos” is the on-screen proof of what happens when business turns personal.

After Escobar killed Kiko Moncada, Judy’s husband, she went on a rampage to seek revenge. Her husband’s death not only left her in the rare position as a female head of a cocaine-trafficking empire, it also gave her a chance to showcase how a woman can hold her place as a major player.

Cold and diplomatic, Judy maintained her powerful presence in the show while also looking head-to-toe fabulous.

But who is the real woman behind the character? Meet the Colombian actress behind Judy Moncada: Cristina Umaña.

1 First things first: Judy Moncada isn’t a real person.

“Narcos” fans already know that the creators of the show based the plot on a true story. Because of this, they often look up to see what happened to the real-life versions of their favorite characters. However, Judy Moncada is a fictitious character.

But despite being fake, Judy still represents an important part of the Moncada family. “They [the Moncadas] played a very big role in the fall of Pablo,” actress Umaña explained to Latina magazine.

Throughout season two, Judy was the impressive mind behind Los Pepes. And she even proved to pose an actual threat to the Medellin cartel (Escobar’s empire).

2 Even if Judy Moncada ended up in a less-than-ideal situation, actress Cristina Umana is in a great place.

At the end of season two, audiences watched Judy Moncada forced into a plane and headed to a mysterious location. Thankfully, actress Cristina Umaña’s future is looking much brighter. Though Cristina Umaña isn’t a household name in the United States yet, she’s a powerhouse actress in Colombia.

Her career started at an early age. At just nine years old, she moved to Bogotá to take part in short literature and theater workshops. By 18, she moved to Mexico to study acting with a scholarship from the production company “Televisa.”

Since then, she’s been in theater, television shows and feature films. She’s best known for her role as Blanca in “El Rey (The King)” and Lorenza in “Todos Quieren Con Marilyn (Everyone Wants Marilyn).” And thanks to her role in the latter movie, Umaña won a TV y Novelas award for best villain. But aside from that award, she’s won several other awards for her performances in Colombia.

3 Umana has appeared in six telenovelas.

Umaña definitely has a number of starring roles under her belt. On DramaFever, you can find a collection of telenovelas she’s appeared in, plus links to stream them. She’s appeared in:

  • “Killer Women (Mujeres Asesinas)”
  • “Treat Me Nice (Tratame Bien)”
  • “LEX”
  • “Montecristo”
  • “One Step Forward (Un Paso Adelante)”
  • “Paco’s Men (Los Hombres de Paco).”

If you’re interested in watching telenovelas and already love Cristina Umaña, these shows are a good start.

4 As a Colombia native, Umana lived through Escobar’s reign.

According to her Latina magazine interview, Umaña was just a teenager in the 1980’s and ’90s during Escobar’s rule in Colombia. “I remember perfectly that moment, and it was a difficult moment for us as a society,” she said. “As a society we lived with fear to go out day-to-day because anything could happen to us.”

Umaña also added that she thinks Pablo Escobar was a “very confused man.” According to her, he made bad decisions that hurt his family and a whole nation. “He was a man who let his ego win and walked all over a whole country,” she explained.

5 Umana thinks it’s important to tell the ‘Narcos’ story.

“I think it’s important to watch and mention that the business of narco trafficking is not a subject for who creates it, distributes it, but also who consumes it,” Umaña told Latina magazine. “There is something that needs to be examined by society to be able to stop that business. While there are consumers, there will always be producers who are going to profit from it.”

And while she understands the importance of the story, the main question her “Narcos” fans are asking is if they we see Cristina Umaña in future seasons. Right now, producers haven’t confirmed her return. But if we’ve learned anything from the show it’s to not count anyone out in “Narcos” until they’re dead.
