Some of these facts will surprise you...
Have you ever wondered how ENTITY got the scoop on some of its most viral articles? What about how we keep finding those hilarious memes you love to “like” on our Facebook page? Well, here’s one of ENTITY’s secret weapons: Editor and Social Media Director Taryn Hillin.
But what is Hillin really like – and how did she get to where she is today? Here are five facts you should know about Taryn Hillin!
Graduating from Yale is impressive, but that isn’t the surprising part of Hillin’s educational history. When you imagine a social media expert or magazine editor, majors like writing or marketing may come to mind. Hillin, however, is rarely one to follow others’ leads.
Instead, she graduated with a degree in Political Science and Comparative Government. This just goes to show that there’s no single path people must follow to enter – and dominate – the online publishing field. And if your slightly unusual major gives you expert insight into a topic commonly covered by today’s hottest magazines? Well, that’s just a bonus.
ENTITY is hardly the only media company that Hillin has been involved with. From 2012 to 2013, she worked as a writer and producer for TMZ. Then, she spent a year as the associate editor of Huffington Post. (Fun fact: she was part of the team that majorly boosted the readership of Huff Post’s “Women’s Voices” section).
Hillin then moved on to work as a reporter for Fusion. Her specialty? Writing about sex, love, health, women’s rights and the science of relationships. Luckily, those interests align perfectly with ENTITY’s mission statement. Hillin has been applying her expertise – in writing, social media and more – to ENTITY since the start of 2017.
Do you remember reading about TMZ’s Harvey Levin quietly meeting with President Donald Trump?
ENTITY broke that story first, before it was picked up by sites like The Wrap and The New York Times. The ENTITY writer responsible for the scoop? None other than Taryn Hillin.
Places like Spin and Adweek then wrote follow-up stories on how ENTITY “scooped everyone,” likely through Hillin using her old TMZ connections. We’ll just say this: any writer who beats The New York Times to a story deserves a little round of applause.
Don’t know what IPAs are? We got you covered; they’re American Indian Pale Ale Beers, an iconic variety of craft beer. While there are countless kinds, Hillin prefers those from the West Coast. Any other hardcore West Coast IPA fans out there?
Even if you’re not a beer aficionado, you can probably relate to Hillin’s love of baby goat videos. You know you’ve found a good job when finding the cutest baby goat video, coming up with a funny caption and posting it to your site’s facebook page is part of your average workday!
Like everyone who works at ENTITY, Hillin believes in empowering women in every aspect of their daily lives. Part of that mission involves calling out injustice – and Hillin is never afraid to do just that. Just a peek at her Twitter account shows that Hillin has a penchant for finding injustice and spreading the word.
She does the same in her articles for ENTITY. She’s written about everything from Donald Trump fans “hating women” to North Carolina women being unable to reject sex if they’ve already said yes. If you want to be kept up-to-date on the state of gender equality, Hillin is your gal.
Whether you admire how hard ENTITY’s Facebook page can make you laugh or how hard-hitting our articles on women’s rights can be, Taryn Hillin is one of the people you should thank. And if her story gives you major career #goals too? That’s just a bonus!
