Well, that was short-lived. Just months after the intriguing casting announcement, Amy Schumer revealed she will no longer be playing a live-action Barbie.
“Sadly, I’m no longer able to commit to Barbie due to scheduling conflicts. The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.” Schumer told Variety.
It would have been interesting to see the no-holds-barred comedian take on the story of the iconic doll. The Sony film was described as being reminiscent of classics like “Splash” and “Big,” following the titular character as she gets kicked out of Barbieland for not being perfect enough and lands herself in a real-world adventure.
Now that the “Barbie” movie is back to the drawing board for casting, ENTITY can’t help but wonder who may be the next choice to fill those hot pink pumps.
So here are five actresses we think would make a great Barbie in Schumer’s absence:
She had us cracking up as the hilariously sardonic April Ludgate on NBC gem “Parks and Recreation.” And Plaza could certainly add her own brand of dark humor to the new “Barbie” film, livening up the legendary doll. For all those worried the movie would lack Amy Schumer’s bite – remember Plaza crashing the stage at the 2013 MTV Movie Awards? You just know she’d make things interesting.
Just like Barbie, Mindy Kaling is totally the aspirational every girl. Her “real talk” social media presence and best-selling books make you feel like she’s your best friend. But… she also has VIP cred and a jaw-dropping wardrobe. It’d be hysterical to watch Kaling navigate the uptight, homogenized world of Barbieland and make her mark. And for those stuck on the classic, unrealistic blonde Barbie image – the brand is a lot more diverse now.
Who hasn’t fallen into a Twitter black hole, LOL-ing over Chrissy Teigen’s hilarious tweets? The supermodel is outspoken, does not hold back and is a big supporter of body positivity and loving yourself as you are. With Teigen as Barbie this could totally be like a modern revival of “Life-Size” … and you know we all need that.
In Schumer’s stead, Anna Kendrick would definitely be able to bring a little bit of raunchy comedy to the table. Fans love her for her wild – and yet relatable – Twitter account. And with unforgettable roles in comedies like “Pitch Perfect,” “Pitch Perfect 2” and “Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates” it’s obvious Kendrick would bring the laughs.
Mae Whitman took on body shaming in 2015’s “The DUFF,” standing up to school bullies while embracing her own, unique – and super adorable – style. So we have total confidence she would do “Barbie” justice. And it doesn’t hurt that she’s so crazy likable. We’d watch!
Honorable mention: Tyra Banks
Tyra Banks already played a Barbie-like doll in arguably one of the best Disney movies, 2000’s “Life-Size.” She’s famously spoken out about body positivity on a number of occasions, and thanks to her years on “America’s Next Top Model” and her talk show, we know her larger-than-life personality would keep moviegoers entertained. This could be a great substitute just in case she doesn’t get around to finishing this “Life-Size 2” movie we’ve been hearing about for so long…
“Barbie” is set to begin filming this June with a planned June 29, 2018 release date. Mattel’s corresponding promotional and merchandise plans prevented any leeway in the scheduling, hence Schumer having to drop out to promote her upcoming comedy with Goldie Hawn, Snatched.

For now, Sony has yet to announce any casting updates. So only time will tell who will step in for Schumer and take on the role of the iconic doll.
