On March 15 of this year, people participating in the the Ides of Trump movement each mailed a postcard to the White House, describing their “vocal opposition to the new president.” The campaign grew organically over social media, with founders Zack Kushner and Ted Sullivan hoping to get “under [Trump’s] incredibly thin skin” and “get Congress to do their job and investigate Trump.”

Unsurprisingly, a counter-movement emerged to mail letters of support to Trump on March 16. Let’s just say that Trump got a lot of late Valentine’s Day (and anti-Valentine’s Day) cards this year!
The truth is, Trump Valentine’s Day cards trended for more reasons than just humor. These cards gained traction because of what they represented.
They showed that people can still find love and humor in a time of great political division. They proved the power of the written word and perhaps even inspired other card movements. They even raised awareness of important issues – like Trump’s Mexico wall and deportation policies – and allowed people to express their beliefs, oppositions and values in a different way.

Sure, these cards didn’t follow the typical “Valentine’s Day” theme. But politics doesn’t just occur on TV screens or in magazines; it happens everyday in people’s normal routines, from the material taught at schools to policies at work.
