Surging in the ratings, blowing up on social media and stacking up awards nominations, “This Is Us” has become the hottest show on TV.
NBC’s tearjerker drama starring Mandy Moore and Milo Ventimiglia just scored its highest viewing figures yet with its latest episode drawing 10.56 million viewers in the Nielsen ratings.
Just nine episodes into its debut season, the story of two parents, their three children and the many struggles they share together is already shaping up to be a TV classic. Here are ENTITY’s five reasons why.
The pop star has made no secret of his obsession with the show, tweeting that it makes him cry. After seeing the very first episode Mayer posted, “I’m hooked. Cryin’ and hooked.” He has even struck up a Twitter dialogue with series star Mandy Moore after she saw his emotional tweets about the show.

Every good show has a character you love to hate. On “This Is Us,” that character is Miguel, played by John Huertas, who seems responsible, due to reasons not yet clear, for the break up of the show’s central couple. The haters pour their scorn on him on social media within moments of each Tuesday’s episode ending, calling for the character to be stabbed, shot or strangled as soon as possible!

Unusually for such a new show, the series has instantly found favor with awards voters and was just nominated for Best Drama Series in the prestigious Critics’ Choice Television Awards. Meanwhile Milo Ventimiglia and Mandy Moore, who play the parents at the center of the series, have been nominated for favorite actor and actress, respectively, at the People’s Choice Awards, where the show is also up for best new drama. Reviewers have raved about the show, which has a 91 percent fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Each episode is an emotional rollercoaster that has viewers reaching for the tissues. No other show can rip your heart out but still send you rushing back for more. The cast are thrilled the viewers seem so invested. “I don’t know of anything out there right now that makes it feel good to cry, and you still feel hopeful and full at the very end of your emotional release,” Ventimiglia told Entertainment Weekly.

“Gilmore Girls” fans loved him as Rory’s bad boy suitor Jess, a role he reprises in Netflix’s revival series “Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life,” and now they can love him even more as the nice guy dad in “This Is Us.” The show also offers a welcome return to the screen for Mandy Moore who first found fame as a pop star then built a busy acting career which peaks with her greatest role yet as a mom with secrets in the smash hit show.
