Entity explains why we swear and if we should stop. (why swear)

Even the most dyed-in-the-wool and proper of us can admit that we’ve let a swear word slip once or twice. Whether you have the mouth of a sailor who’s had a little too much rum, or you just tend to mutter under your breath when you’re fixing the bathroom sink, swearing seems to be an unshakable part of life. But, what is it that leads our mouths to blurt out the crudest four-letter word we can think of in a heated moment? Turns out, a lot.

Oftentimes, swearing can be a sweet release. When you’ve just stepped in a puddle on the way to work or stubbed your toe, nothing can be more effective in liberating your frustration than dropping an F-bomb or two. According to Cosmos magazine, one reason why letting out an expletive when you’re in private can be such a satisfying feeling is because we’re not supposed to curse. Cosmos says that “the word profane comes from the Latin root “pro”, meaning before, and “fanum”, meaning temple. So a profanity was something that you said only before the temple – or, in today’s language, outside it. A profanity was definitely not to be spoken inside the temple.”

Another major reason why we swear is for emphasis. Sure, you could say “this pasta is great.” But you could say “this pasta is f***ing great.” Which one of those really lets the people know how you’re feeling? Obviously the latter, although crude it may be. So oftentimes, our intentions aren’t malicious when we’re cursing, we just want to let everyone know just how strong our feelings are.

So, should we stop cursing? All signs point to: no, not really. As long as you’re not going out of your way to harm others with your words, cursing is a natural release. This doesn’t mean you should leave an explosive trial of F-bombs in your path wherever you travel, but don’t feel bad if you slip up once or twice. We’re only human: imperfect creatures born with profanity in our nature.
