Emma Morano, the world’s oldest person, has just celebrated her 117th birthday.

Morano was born in Italy on November 29, 1899, making her the last living person born in the 1800s. She has lived in three different centuries, been around for two world wars and has witnessed more than 90 Italian governments.

Last month, when she made it into the Guinness World Records book as the oldest person alive, Morano simply said, “My word, I’m as old as the hills.”

And while many people believe drinking a glass of wine a day will keep the doctor away, brandy-drinking Morano credits her long life to independence and eating raw eggs.

“I eat two eggs a day and that’s it. And cookies.” the supercentenarian said. “But I do not eat much because I have no teeth.”

Along with eggs, Morano’s diet consists of a liter of mineral water a day with a banana every afternoon. She also used to eat 500 grams of Gianduiotti (chocolates made with hazelnuts) every week.

However, Morano’s doctor believes Morano’s love of life and positive thinking are the main factors to her long life.

Morano has been living the single lifestyle since 1938, after leaving her abusive husband. “I didn’t want to be dominated by anyone,” Emma said. She then decided never to commit herself to anyone again. During that time, divorce in Italy wasn’t legally possible. However, Emma Morano proudly looks back at her life as an independent woman. After leaving her husband, she supported herself as a factory worker and a cook.

Morano has lived in the Italian town of Pallanza for 30 years. However, many of the townspeople have never seen her because she has not left her second-story apartment for 15 years.

Reassuringly, Emma said, “I’m doing really fine. But my legs are weak.”
