While the occasional cup of coffee is no biggie, caffeine overdose is very much a real thing. And as funny as it may seem, coffee should not be administered via an I.V.

Although having a dependency on coffee might not seem like an issue, it can certainly be alarming to need several cups a day.  Here are some signs you might be addicted to coffee.

Taking in too much coffee and then being deprived of it can actually induce headaches. According to WebMD, the caffeine in coffee narrows blood vessels around the brain. These vessels actually expand when caffeine is no longer present, which can lead to headaches.

It’s also not a good idea to combine caffeine with certain medications, as this can cause what is known as a rebound headache. This is when the headache comes back, and it tends to be worse than it was originally. This is especially common if combined with painkillers.

Muscle spasms

Yes, drinking too much coffee can make muscles go crazy due to the effects caffeine has on the nervous system. Some people can experience muscle spasms when drinking low levels of caffeine, while others experience these muscle spasms at high levels. So, for those trying to avoid spontaneous muscle twitching, ditching a cup or two of coffee could help.

Anxiety and stress

For people who suffer from anxiety or undergo a lot of stress, coffee might not be the best option. Developing a habit of drinking too much can lead to excessive sweat. This is made worse for people who have anxiety already.

High intakes of caffeine can increase cortisol levels in the body which can lead to higher levels of stress. So while one cup of coffee might not lead to stress, drinking excessive amounts can have this negative effect on the body.

While a person who does not consume coffee on a regular basis might find it easy to stay motivated and alert with one cup, a person who is used to drinking more coffee won’t get the same effects. One cup, two or even three cups might leave them needing more. Not only does this mean that your body is becoming immune to the effects, but your wallet will also take a bigger hit.

It’s best to limit consumption of coffee to once a day and no more than 300 milligrams, otherwise the body will become tolerant to its effects.

You’re irritable

Some people may experience a change in mood when they go without coffee. If this happens, there is a high chance that the stimulants in the coffee are playing a major role in adrenaline release. Adrenaline is also known to lead to a “feel good” feeling.

People who regularly drink too much coffee can find that they become irritable when they don’t drink it, which is a sign that the body is relying on it too much for the pleasure release that comes from it.

If you experience any of these signs, perhaps its time to cut back on the coffee intake. Sure, you may think you need coffee to function like a normal human being, but taking it in moderation will help in the long run.
