Entity discusses Zoie Burgher

641,000 Twitter followers, 1,151, 067 YouTube subscribers and 5,262 readers on Reddit.

Zoie Burgher has become the newest female gaming icon… but at what price? She is relatively new in the video gaming community, but somehow she has over a million subscribers. As most YouTubers know, these two phrases are rarely found in the same sentence.

She began the route from college to cash with her infamous Twitch posts.

Two years ago, Zoie was your average college student studying International Relations at Florida State University. Amidst her studies, she picked up the hobby of live-streaming.

Zoie’s story began on the Twitch, an online forum for gamers to live-stream and connect with their followers. After being banned four times due to twerking in a bikini, she moved her act to YouTube, on which she posted similar videos.

After subscribers flooded in, the YouTube community had mixed opinions on her means to success. However, Zoie continued to upload her gaming, and her following has not waned since.

After reaching success in such a competitive field so early, she immediately set her sights higher.

She funded her own reality TV show YouTube channel.

According to The Verge, Zoie’s next project is Luxe House, which is “part gaming team, part media brand and part talent agency.” Think “Real Housewives of Orange County,” but they all live in the same house and play “Call of Duty” all day.

Using her own funds, six other gamers are joining Zoie in a San Diego mansion. The show will follow the vlogging escapades of the lady gamers, and they will use Luxe House and their individual accounts to grow their followings from a central location.

However, like most women who are involved in provocative streaming, part of her profession involves volatile internet reactions — both of the positive and negative variety.

She’s been called a symbol for women’s empowerment, along with a few other less pleasant things.

The positive reactions are mostly from women gamers who have experienced scrutiny in the past — even without posting provocative photos. “It shows that the gaming industry is not just overrun by males,” a female gamer told The Verge.

Although Zoie’s road to success did leave her unroasted, the backlash she gets are what women in the gaming community are used to. Sexual insults and sneers are part of the norm once other users discover your gender, critiques they feel confident giving hiding behind the anonymity of their characters.

Zoie is glad that her gaming has inspired girls to own their identities as gamers. However, she made it clear to Glixel Magazine that her company was not pornographic in nature. “While I’m not against sex work, there is a societal stigma that does affect real life,” Zoie reported. “This can affect the stream team I’m creating, the brand I’m trying to grow.”

Zoie’s story is a cautionary one to any girl involved in social media branding. Despite her monetary success, the spine needed for such criticism is not easily earned. She may have been able to reach the same goals given more time, even without the provocative element.
