Entity reviews the ten best girl groups through the decades.

What’s not to love about ladies making music with other ladies for ladies. From 1960s Motown to ’80s rock to the resurgence of contemporary pop, girl groups are always killing it on the airwaves. Here are 10 all-girl groups kicking butt and some of the songs that made them great.

1 Andrews Sisters – Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy

Consisting of sisters LaVerne, Maxene and Patty, the Andrews Sisters were known for their perfect harmonies. Emerging from the 1940s, the Andrews Sisters were catchy, upbeat and hugely popular.

2 The Supremes – Baby Love

This girl group is perhaps the biggest to come from Motown record label between 1961 to 1971. The Surpremes introduced us to Diana Ross and would also be the inspiration for Dreamgirls.

3 The Runaways – California Paradise

In the ’70s girls groups proved that they could make more than pop; they could rock hard and get messy. The Runaways was one of the first all-girl rock bands, introducing us to rock legends like Joan Jett and Lita Ford.

4 The Bangles – Walk like an Egyptian

During the 1980s there was an influx of girl pop rock groups. Women with bass guitars, tambourines, harmonies and big hair took center stage. No band personified this era better than The Bangles; their 1986 song “Walk like an Egyptian” made them a worldwide hit.

5 Spice Girls – Say You’ll be there

As the ’90s rolled around there was a resurgence of traditional pop groups. But this time they had a new message. With their chunky soled shoes, poppy beats reminiscent of the 1960s, fun personas and empowering message of girl power, The Spice Girls quickly became a worldwide phenomenon.

6 Destiny’s Child – Bootylicious

Destiny’s Child gave the world the word “bootylicious” and Beyoncé. Destiny’s Child mixed the R&B girl groups of the ’90s with the charisma and harmonies of bands like The Supremes.

7 Sleater-Kinney – A New Wave

The ’90s not only produced bands like Destiny’s Child, the era also produced music rooted in the riot grrl movement. Sleater-Kinney was one of the most popular bands of this time.

8 Little Mix – Black Magic

In the mid-2000s there was a wave of new girl pop groups with origins in reality television.  Produced by the British X Factor, Little Mix has been compared to the female One Direction.

9 Tegan and Sara – Boyfriend

One rock group currently rocking it is Canadian sister duo Tegan and Sara.  The women, with their indie pop harmonies and blend of synth and indie rock, are as irresistible as their bittersweet love ballads.

10 2NEI – I AM THE BEST

The next big movement for girl groups? With the rise of Kpop in recent years, plenty of girl groups have taken center stage. Consisting of CL, Bom and Dara, 2ne1 is one of the biggest South Korean musical groups in the game.
