ENTITY showcases 7 restaurants owned by women to answer the question of "What should I eat?"

When you go to a restaurant, you should look at more than just how good the food is — think about who is running the place. Customer service and even the values of the restaurant are important so that you can support businesses that align with your own views.  Sure, you could just cook at home, but where’s the fun in that?

Here at ENTITY we care about female empowerment, and supporting women-owned business is one way we uphold that. In this list, you’ll find female-run restaurants in Los Angeles County that serve up tons of great dishes. When we support other women that do, we all succeed.

1 Lucques

Lucques is a restaurant with a nice rustic feel, co-owned by Caroline Styne and Suzanne Goin. If you’re looking for fancy eats, like their Niman Ranch Hanger Steak with wild mushroom gratin, roasted shallots and marrow butter, then look no further. Suzanne Goin won Outstanding Chef of the Year at the James Beard Foundation Awards in 2016 and was inducted into their Who’s Who of Food&Beverage in America. Caroline Styne is the sommelier of the restaurant and has produced her own wines, as well.

2 Native

Chef Nyesha Arrington truly created a beauty when she created Native. The restaurant’s menu is as diverse as the city itself, serving up wagyu beef tartare and deep fried chocolate bars! Arrington is also a huge proponent of fresh locally and responsibly sourced ingredients in her cooking, so you might be able to catch her at the Santa Monica Farmers Market near Native (or on season 9 of Top Chef).

3 Cake Monkey Bakery

Ready for some dessert? The child of Lisa Olin and Elizabeth Elkind, Cake Monkey Bakery has enough cakes and pastries to fill your heart and stomach. Grab a spiced coffee cake donut to go or order a mini layered confetti cake for that special someone a.k.a. yourself.

4 Good Girl Dinette

The delicious concept by Diep Tran puts a Vietnamese spin on American comfort food. Serving up chicken curry alongside chicken pot pies, this place has all the good eats you could ask for. She’s even featured in the Netflix Original “Ugly Delicious” which means you’ll have a show to binge watch after your meal.

5 Botanica

Need a meal that’ll bring some color and aesthetic to your Instagram?  This restaurant has everything you need to revive your social media and your body with beautiful, natural good eats. Food writers and chefs Heather Sperling and Emily Fiffer revamped an old liquor store and created this restaurant to be a tasty haven on unprocessed foods, and they succeeded. The website also has recipes so you can go home and continue to eat healthily.

6 MADCAPRA

Do you like falafel? Yes? Thank goodness, because that’s all they sell at MADCAPRA, they sell it well. This falafel shop sells vegetarian/ vegan-friendly falafel sandwiches and salads. In their own words, Chefs Sarah Hymanson and Sara Kramer started MADCAPRA “Because vegetables” and I can’t think of a better reason to open up a delicious falafel-filled heaven.

7 N/Naka

This last restaurant is quite fancy, but with a renowned chef like Niki Nakayama, there’s no other way to go. N/Naka serves up 13-course meals in Japanese kaiseki style. The ingredients vary by season and the menu varies nightly, so if you find it in you’re wallet to go more than once, you can expect to get something different each time. Nakayama was also the subject of Chef’s Table’s fourth episode, so if you’re looking for another Netflix show to binge, you got it.
