Speculation is rampant about who will take over one of the biggest roles in TV as the next “Doctor Who” – and ENTITY insists it should be a woman.

After all, ever since the long running sci-fi series started in 1963, the Time Lord central character – who regenerates into a new body every few years – has always been played by a man.

Now that Peter Capaldi is stepping down, the leading candidates to take over the role are all men. But as ENTITY’s Sandro Monetti pointed out on CNN, there is no reason to reject women in this casting process.

As recent episodes of the BBC cult classic have shown, the character’s alien race have the ability to switch from male to female with each new regeneration. So surely after 12 actors in the part, it’s time for a Time Lady to be the 13th Doctor.

ENTITY identifies five talented women with the ability to make history and take the keys to the TARDIS.

1 OLIVIA COLMAN

Olivia Coleman

Currently British TV’s most versatile and hard working actress she has become a UK national treasure for hit shows like murder mystery “Broadchurch” and sitcom “Peep Show.” Olivia recently won a Golden Globe Award for spy thriller “The Night Manager.” Having worked on “Broadchurch” with the incoming “Doctor Who” producer Chris Chibnall, who leads the casting search,  she could well have the inside track in this race.

2 HELENA BONHAM CARTER

Quirky and eccentric are words that match both the Doctor character and this actress. Having played Bellatrix Lestrange in the “Harry Potter” films and a string of memorable other parts in films from “Les Miserables” to “Sweeney Todd,” pulling off the character of an oddball, time traveling alien should not be a problem.

3 SHERIDAN SMITH

Sheridan Smith

Another much-loved and much-admired British actress who has won a string of awards on stage and screen, she got a big break in ex-boyfriend James Corden’s sitcom “Gavin and Stacey” and went on to become the queen of London’s West End theater scene, most recently in “Funny Girl.” Between those jobs she starred in  a range of “Doctor Who” audio adventures but as the assistant rather than the Time Lord.

4 RUTH NEGGA

Ruth Negga

A best actress Oscar nominee for new film “Loving,” this fast rising star would also bring prestige to the show. An Irish actress with Ethiopian roots who now lives in London, she broke through in TV series “Preacher” before starring in “Loving” about an interracial romance in 1960s Virginia.

5 HAYLEY ATTWELL

Hayley Atwell

Part of the Marvel family after starring in the TV series “Agent Carter” and  a string of superhero movies, she is well known to large parts of the potential fan base and has already tweeted her interest in taking over the title role in “Doctor Who.” Plus, now that her series “Conviction” has just been cancelled, she’s certainly available for work.
