No bad day is complete without a sad movie or song to ugly cry to.

I’m not sure what it is, but when we’re having a bad day, it only seems necessary to make ourselves feel even sadder by listening to or watching something that relates to our already sad mood.

And it’s common sense that independent movies are the ultimate sad movies.

1 The Perks of Being a Wallflower

This ultimate coming of age story was the anthem to most people’s teen years. As if the book itself wasn’t sad enough, somehow the movie is so much more depressing. Logan Lerman plays a perfect portrayal of, Charlie, the ultimate sad boy. As you follow his life, the more you end up crying over his life and the fact that you can’t just give him a hug.

2 Before I Disappear

This is an ugly cry guarantee. It’s the saddest of all sad movies on Netflix. When main character Richie’s suicide attempt is interrupted by a call from his estranged sister asking him to look after his 11-year-old niece, Sophia, Richie’s night takes a completely different turn. As he spends the night roaming the streets with Sophia, Sophia somehow ends up saving Richie. Watching the connection between these two characters will tug at the heart strings you didn’t know you had. You won’t be coming out of this movie dry-eyed.

4 Seeking A Friend For the End of the World

Steve Carell is probably the greatest actor alive and his portrayal in this movie is extremely moving. This movie is filled with funny and sad moments, but mostly sad. When there’s only three weeks left on Earth, Carell’s character teams up with Kiera Knightley’s character to help each other get to where they need to be before the world ends. Knightly wants to go back home to her family and Carell wants to reunite with a lost love. The ending of this movie is so unexpected and beautiful that it will literally hurt your heart.

5 Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close

This is basically the movie adaptation of the saddest book to ever exist. Oskar, played by Thomas Horn, loses his father in the 9/11 attack. Oskar goes on a journey to find a hidden message he thinks his father left him after finding a mysterious key.  Even the synopsis of the movie is sad. If you don’t cry at this movie, then there isn’t a single thing in this world that could make you cry.

6 Keith

This movie stars singer Jesse McCartney making this the second film he’s actually acted in, but he does a great job. When McCartney’s character, Keith, finally grabs the attention of the girl of his dreams, unfortunate news cuts their romance short. But the time they spend together is a beautiful romance. You’ll regain the attachment to Jesse McCartney you forgot you had in 2008. Then, you will have your heart broken, and it’s honestly traumatic.

7 Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This is the ultimate sad indie movie. It’s an oldie but still a goodie. Clementine, played by Kate Winslet,  and her boyfriend Joel, played by Jim Carrey, surgically erase the memories of each other from their minds. Then, Joel goes through the same procedure just to immediately regret losing those memories. As Clementine and Joel have their memories erased, the film shows the timeline of their relationship. This movie is going to make you pine for a relationship you never had or make you miss a relationship you had but lost. Either way, you’re going to be in tears trying to call your ex.

Independent movies aren’t afraid to find your biggest insecurities and heartbreaks and lay them out in the open, which makes them the ultimate sad movies. If you’re looking for a truly ugly cry where you wonder if you’ll ever be happy again, these movies will do the trick.
