Groaning at the sound of your alarm clock, you slowly open your eyes – a feat made more difficult by the day-old mascara gluing them closed. Your head is pounding, you’re still wearing last night’s mini dress and you can’t even remember how you got from the local bar to bed.
Sound familiar? Then you may be one of the many modern women who are going out too much. Spending time being social is important. In fact, Forbes reports that isolation increases a person’s odds of death by 50 percent. But, too much fun with friends can be just as bad for you. How to know if you’re partying too hard? Here are eight red flags every woman – or man – should watch for!
Perhaps this isn’t true for everyone, but alone time with Netflix is a sacred form of entertainment when home. Who needs girlfriends and drinks when you have Ryan Gosling staring at you longingly from your computer screen? If you can’t remember how to log into Netflix or – gasp – what show was your latest guilty pleasure, it may be time to kick off your shoes and curl up on the couch instead.
If you’re partying like a glam rock star every night, who has time to slip on PJ’s when you finally make it home? Most likely, you end up sleeping in that tight mini skirt or, if you’re feeling motivated, nothing at all. As the Huffington Post explains, though, PJ’s might be the key to your health and happiness. So, stop trying to figure out how to walk (or dance) in your heels and instead take the time to change into an elegant silk robe or even your favorite oversized t-shirt. This way, you’re setting the tone for a confident and restful night’s sleep.
You finally wake up the next morning around noon and you’re starving. Blurry eyed, you walk to the fridge, open it…and it’s empty. Since you’ve been going out so much, shopping for groceries fell to the bottom of your to-do list. And, with the way your head is feeling now, your new trend of eating take-out for breakfast will have to do. More time out usually equals more time going out to eat and less time for shopping and cooking your own meals. Don’t get stuck in this cycle. Not only will your fridge miss you, but your stomach will miss home cooking too!
Ever accidentally tell a story twice to the same person? Talk about awkward. When you spend all your free time hanging out with your friends, though, you’ll eventually run out of things to say. According to Psych Central, many people suffer from FOMO, of the “fear of missing out.” But if there’s nothing new to say at the “super cool” party happening tonight, there’s nothing to miss!
Back to snacks…in particular, the snack attack that commonly hits during a late night out in the town. When you stay up later, it makes sense that you have more time to eat. But midnight munchies turn into skipping breakfast that turns into a big lunch and no dinner until midnight strikes again. If you find yourself eating at such odd times you can’t even label your meals, maybe you should think of changing your schedule as a whole.
As Bustle points out, going out ain’t cheap! Instead of a $3 bottle of wine from Trader Joes, you’re spending $10 per drink at a club, buying drinks for strangers and paying cab fares or entry fees. The key to a healthy social life is “balance” – including a balanced bank account!
Maybe you don’t even drink every night you go out, but Motrin still may turn into your new best friend. Whether it’s from a hangover, dehydration, a weird sleeping position or simply a lack of sleep, constantly going out can turn into a constant headache.
You should be going out to connect with friends, to find your (bar-loving) soulmate, to relax after a hard day of work or to simply enjoy escaping your apartment. Once you start saying “yes” to social invites out of habit instead of true desire, force yourself to take a break – if only for one night. Who knows? You might find that reuniting with your couch, binging some “Orange is the New Black” and enjoying a home-cooked meal is all the party you want for now.
