Entity shares the art of the half bun for curly or straight hair.

Whether you call it a top-knot, samurai-bun,  or the half-up, half-down do, you know what this cute bun looks like. The half bun is the style that everybody from Nicki Minaj to Gwen Stefani has been loving recently, and with a few short steps, you can make the look your own.

1 ADD TEXTURE: CURLY CUTIES, SKIP AHEAD TO STEP TWO.

The half bun is a look that’s all about height and volume. For the bone-straight baddies out there who are lacking in this department, we’ve got you covered. Start by whipping out that curling wand and making large curls or waves in your hair. Next, add your favorite texturizing, voluminous hairspray to get things looking beachy, effortless, sun-kissed, and wind-swept.

2 MAKE YOUR PART.

Typically, half-buns are created from a part at the crown of your head stretching right behind both  ears.  This is a messy look, so precision isn’t key. Skip the comb if you’d like; your fingers will be just fine. After making your part, pull the section of your hair that will not be in the bun back into a ponytail to keep it out of the way.

3 GET YOUR TEXTURE UNDER CONTROL: BONE-STRAIGHT BADDIES, SKIP AHEAD TO STEP FOUR.

Now that you’ve got the party in the back sectioned off, it’s time to handle your business in the front. Spray your edges with some water and begin to brush your hair up into the ponytail that will form your bun. Add your favorite edge control or gel for extra hold.

4 TIME TO MAKE YOUR BUN!

Start your bun by forming a ponytail on the top of your head. If you want extra volume, do not pull the ponytail all the way through. Rather, make a loop and wrap the excess around the base of the bun and use a bobby pin to hold things in place. If you want a sleeker, more samurai-bun look, split your fully-pulled ponytail into two sections. Wrap one side of the section around the base of the ponytail, near the rubber band, and pin it in place. Repeat for the other section. Take down the back section of your hair and style it the way you like it.
