Entity asks what the traits of strong women are.

Every day, women around the world move one step forward in the fight for equal rights.

Making strides in science, technology and countless other fields, women have proven their potential and ambition in the workforce. And each step forward gives women more wiggle room to stand firm and show the world their tenacity.

Despite this, many of the strong female characters heralded as feminist icons are perceived as strong because they present masculine traits. Wonder Woman kicks butt? She “fights like a man.” And before we know it, we’ve moved one step back.

Sometimes it seems that a woman can only be strong if she acts like less of a woman. Curious about this way of thinking, ENTITY set out to get to the bottom of what strong women look like. To shows that femininity is not the absence of but the presence of power, ENTITY writers share the qualities they see in the strong women of their lives.

1 A Strong Woman is brave.

“When I think of a ‘strong woman’ I think of a brave woman. I think of someone with character who, despite what goes on around her, is steadfast in what she knows to be right. I think of someone who gives her best no matter what happens to her. She keeps believing and keeps trying.”

Johanie Cools

2 A Strong woman is a role model.

“If we’re talking about real people, I think of my mom because she is a single mom raising two kids on her own while running her own business for 16 years. And she has been successful with all of it. I am extremely grateful for such an amazing role model. She works so hard.

“If you’re talking about fictional people, Princess Tiana is my person. She is another hard worker who isn’t going to let anything, especially the color of her skin, stop her from achieving her goals.”

3 A strong woman is goal-oriented.

“A strong woman is one who stays true to herself, shows perseverance, goes after her goals and uplifts those around her.”

Jayda Patterson

4 A strong woman is hard-working.

“When my dad died I watched my mom crumble, but then she came back up stronger than anyone I know. She loved my dad so much and they did so much for each other. It was really hard for her to imagine a life without him, especially as the rest of my siblings grew up and moved out.

“Although I know she misses him every day she works extremely hard to learn to do the things she used to depend on him for. She works five days a week at a job that doesn’t pay her enough so that if we (my siblings and I) ever need anything she will be able to provide for us. A strong woman is someone who can get through loss and pain and keep pushing forward.”

5 A strong woman stands up for herself.

“When I think of a strong woman I think of Claire Underwood from ‘House of Cards.’ Yes, she is a fictional character but that woman is my idol. She stands for what she wants, uses everything she has to her advantage and takes no crap.”

7 A strong woman supports those around her.

“My mom was literally a rock for me and my sisters when we were little. Hillary Clinton is also strong for putting up with being in the political limelight, especially while she was running for president.”

Justine Morales

8 A strong woman is vulnerable.

“I’ve always thought strong women are the ones that can smile their way through everything, but are also not afraid to open up and be vulnerable.”

Corinne Zwarter
