Baylor University Students Rail Against Racist Frat Party

Well, it’s that time of year again.

We’re at the beginning of May, so right around the time in 1862 that the Mexican army defeated France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (so yeah, not Mexican Independence Day). So inevitably ignorant Americans will trot out Mexican stereotypes in the name of “celebration.”

Like say, dressing as construction workers and maids and chanting about building a wall? Well, that’s what fraternity Kappa Sigma at Baylor University did this past weekend, anyway, for their “Cinco de Drinko” party.

Baylor University jumped on reprimanding the chapter, calling the party a “racially insensitive event” – uh, you think?! – and launching an investigation. That Kappa Sigma chapter is currently suspended. In emails to CNN the frat said “the allegations are inconsistent with the values of Kappa Sigma,” aka, what every frat says anytime they get in trouble for hazing or holding racist and/or sexist parties.

Of course, as admirable as it was for the University to so quickly tackle the issue, that’s likely because it came less than one year after scandal resulted in then university president Ken Starr stepping down.

Results of an independent investigation revealed a “fundamental failure” to respond adequately to student sexual assault allegations, including some involving players for the Texas school’s rising football program. Quell surprise.

It’s no wonder the new president would want to make moves wherever he could. That being said, students still protested this week, presenting a list of demands to the University, such as sanctions against the fraternity, a formal apology, mandatory cultural competency education and more diversity.

Best of luck to those students. And for everyone else – Cinco de Mayo is tomorrow. Try not to be a culturally insensitive dick.
