Entity explores why Anna Wintour hates black clothes.

Anna Wintour, the editor-in-chief of American Vogue, is picky with her style. And she has every right to be–she’s been running the fashion magazine, nay, fashion Bible, since 1988 with great success. She’s even had a movie character (allegedly) based on her, played by Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada.

And for being so widely known and highly regarded in the fashion world, she’s garnered a significant amount of interest regarding one of her style laws in particular: no black.

This is a well-established fact. In the documentary The September Issue, following the production of Vogue’s 2007 September issue, the biggest fashion publication of the year, Anna Wintour makes it apparent that she really hates the color. When she’s presented with a rack of clothes in the film, she opens up about her disdain for the color used in fashion, and her employees take this into consideration when they dress themselves for work.

The fashion mogul has even gone so far as to criticize celebrities for their choices to dress in black. Over a chat with Kim Kardashian, Wintour asked the mother of North West why she dresses her child in all black, and suggested brightening up her wardrobe with some pinks and pastels. She must not know that the tot’s father, Kanye West, hates the color pink, and forbade it to be worn by his daughter.

Regardless, Wintour may have a point. Black clothing is a classic, but classics can become stale and lazy after a while. The art of putting together an outfit is how the colors are styled together in harmony, and dressing in all-black like Anna Wintour claimed she would never do, can be a cop-out. Plus, if we all dressed ourselves in black, as it’s so easy to do, there would be no variety in fashion, a facet of the field that is crucial for its growth and transformation. So hats-off to you, Ms. Wintour, for inspiring us all to dress colorfully and differently.
