ENTITY reports on born leap day

If you were born on Leap Day, then you understand what it feels like to never be able to celebrate your birthday on its actual date. Or, you know, for people to never recognize Feb. 29 as a real day.

But how could it not be? You were born on that day. And what day are you supposed to celebrate your birthday? Feb. 28 or March 1?

It’s a struggle, to say the least.

What’s it like being born on Leap Day?

The Atlantic staff writer Daniel Nester wrote about the first time he attempted to get into a bar on his 21st birthday. When he showed his ID to the barkeep, the barkeep slid it back because he thought it was a fake ID since his birthday was on Feb. 29. But when Nester attempted to explain it wasn’t fake, the barkeep told him it was Feb. 28 and he had to come back the next day.

When co-founder of the Honor Society of Leap Year Day babies website, Raenell Dawn, found out, she told Nester about her experience trying to get her driver’s license.

“When I moved to Oregon and went to get my driver’s license I was told there is no February 29,” Raenell Dawn said. “The DMV employee actually said to me ‘Are you sure it’s February 29?’ As if I wasn’t sure of my own birth date!”

Multiple government forms and websites don’t acknowledge Feb. 29 as an actual date, which causes Leap Day babies to run into problems.

But although being born on a Leap Day may have its downsides, there are also a lot of fun facts to know.

Here’s what you may not have known about Leap Day babies.

Since there are 1,461 days in four years, there is a 1 in 1,461 chance of being born on a Leap Day. While these chances seem high, there are about 4 million people born on Leap Day in the entire world.

But, there are only 187,000 leaplings in the U.S.

Also, there is a Guinness World Record for most consecutive generations born on Feb. 29. Peter Anthony was born in Ireland on Feb. 29, 1940. His son, Peter Eric was born on the same day in 1964. Then his granddaughter, Bethany Wealth, was born on a Leap Day in 1996.

There is also a tradition of women proposing to men on Leap Days in Ireland. Since fifth century Ireland, women were given permission to propose to men who were taking too long to propose to them. It’s a strange tradition, but it’s 2017 and these silly traditions no longer apply to us. Women can propose anytime of any day of any year.

Lastly, people in Greece believe getting married in Leap Years is bad luck. You probably shouldn’t plan your next destination wedding in Greece if you’re getting married in 2020.
