Entity interviews photographer Charles March about how to take a perfect picture.

One of the world’s leading photographers is sharing with ENTITY readers his tips for taking a perfect picture.

Lord Charles March started out as an apprentice to legendary movie director Stanley Kubrick before launching a multi award-winning career in still life photography, which has included shooting advertising campaigns for Levi’s and many other leading brands.

Now the British photographer has brought an exhibition of his latest work, an ocean photography project called Seascape, to the Venus Over Los Angeles gallery in downtown L.A. Ahead of its opening this Tuesday, Nov. 8, he shared with us these five tips for taking a perfect photo.

1 Think about the colors in the picture.

Do they work together? Do they look good together? If not, think about changing it to black and white. Might be a much more effective picture.

2 Underexpose.

Underexpose everything by half a stop. This makes the picture feel much richer.

3 Use Longer Lenses.

It’s best to use longer lenses (telephotos). They are much more flattering than wide angle lenses. These are also good when using more open apertures for throwing backgrounds out of focus, especially in portraiture.

4 Use Polarizing Filters.

Always have a polarizing filter on hand if shooting in day light. This makes skies look glorious.

5 Separate the auto focus from the exposure.

Use the exposure lock so that you can take the exposure level from a different position in the frame to the one you want to focus on.

Explaining why he settled on shooting ocean pictures, like the one above taken in the Bahamas, for his latest exhibition, “Seascape,” Lord March said, “Looking out across the horizon never changes – it is an eternal view looking out to infinity. It is, if you like, a very deep look at the earth and how we see it.

“The sea is also a boundary, a line, something to cross or not. It is calming, inspiring and often dangerous. The exploration of that in-between space is an important part of this for me, the space between sea and shore. In one sense it is always moving and changing and in another it is constant.  It is kind of a no-man’s land, a place of transition. Somewhere that exists one minute and not the next – an invisible boundary. At the same time inviting you in and keeping you out, beckoning and dismissing.”

Seascape can be seen from Nov. 8 to Dec. 3 at Venus Over Los Angeles, 601 South Anderson Street,  Los Angeles, CA  90023.
